My Mood: Points: 3,696.34 Bank: 3,002.63 Total Points: 6,698.97 | Has anyone been on Met and not changed their diet much? I'm already pretty much eating healthy (I do Weight Watchers) and losing weight steadily.
I have an appointment in a couple of weeks and according to my OB who referred me and talked over my results with the endo, they will be putting me on Glucophage.
Just wondering if anyone has successfully taken Met and not had to eliminate certain foods or whatever?

Points: 657.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 657.00 | I have been on Met XR at 1000mg for 12 weeks. I was convinced that the Met was ineffective and that nothing had changed until after nine weeks I got my first cycle since coming off the pill almost a year ago.
I've had no problems and have made no dietary adjustments. Though I plan to after the bar exam. I ordered the IR diet book yesterday. This is primarily to lose a little weight, because I feel like the Met is already working. But many cysters say that an improved diet can greatly increase the efficacy of Met. They recommend the IR diet or South Beach.
I have done Weight Watchers before, and it works. That was before I was dx with PCOS, and I was on the pill. I would also be curious about its interaction with met. You know the WW Core Program is similar to South Beach, not exactly, but similar.

Points: 36,220.01 Bank: 3,348,243.84 Total Points: 3,384,463.85 | I didn't change my diet my first year or so on met...weight loss was minimal (13 pounds in 12 mos), my male hormones and cholesterol were still really high and my periods were coming, but very irregularly (my cycles were 28-60+ days). Plus I was still having side effects (the runs...having to pull over on the highway type thing. UGH).
It really did change the efficacy of the drug when i started eating to control my insulin. Overnight my side effects stopped, and within 6 mos I hit my goal weight, my labs hit normal and my periods have been 28-31 days ever since.
Hope it helps.

My Mood: Points: 1,511.41 Bank: 5,045.15 Total Points: 6,556.56 | I was put on Metformin first and foremost for my diabetes, with it supposedly helping the pcos secondary, not that it had any effect on the pcos. I had to make dietry changes regards becoming diabetic, but have never changed my diet because of the Met. Was just wondering if those of you who have posted on this thread are not diabetics and are just on the Met for it's pcos effects. The Met didn't agree with me when I was on 2000mg a day.. was investigated for every bug under the sun that would cause me to have the violent diarrhea epsisodes I was having. Then as time progressed I wasnt even able to eat as looking at the plate of food made me feel sick, and as soon as I got food in my mouth I felt so sick I could hardly swallow it, no wonder I lost over 30lbs in weight. I moved areas and changed my GP and she said it's the met that is causing your problems. I am only on 1000mg of met and can tolerate that much better, although I still have my moments...lol. I tried coming off the Met but I ended up increasing my insulin to much higher amounts. I went back on the Met as I need it to make my insulin receptors sensitive so that it picks up the insulin.

My doctor never told me to change my diet..even when I was diagnosed as a diabetic, she didn't mention anything about it. So I never did.

| No diabetes here...I'm on it to manage insulin resistance/pcos (periods, male hormones etc).

Points: 803.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 803.00 | The only changes ive made is trying to eat more low GI/eat less high GI. Im on 1500mg met and my side affects have been nearly non existent, so Im lucky there. Ive noticed some people feel ill after eating things such as lettuce or high fat foods --- not me. I havent lost much weight though, only a couple of pounds,so its obvious I need to make some more changes
