But wouldn't a diabetic still have to take thier meds if they became pregnat? So if we (who take met.) kept taking ours at a low does what whould that do? Would it harm the baby? Or us? I think this is a reasonable question! I doin't beleive in taking all kinds of pills and using a pill to cure everything, I use ginger for diareea, cinnoman or mint teas for upset stomach and sometimes just sleep off a headache (depending how bad it is!) But this is a question! Any one have any thoughts? Me 29 & DH 32 (married 1999) DD (aug.2003) DD (Jan.2006) 12 more days till I find out if we FINALLY hit the right day! Fingures crossed Baby #3 |

I was okayed to take it through the entire 1st trimester, but stopped because of morning sickness. It supposedly decreases the miscarriage rate in PCOS women to that of the average woman. When taken throughout the entire pregnancy it is said to decrease the rate of gestational diabetes in PCOS women, which is also elevated. Each doctor seems to have a different comfort level with Met during pregnancy. It will depend on their own experiences if they will even suggest continuing Met during pregnancy. Some will outright ban it and some will insist you keep taking it. There isn't anything to indicate it causes problems, but there also isn't really any research out there that shows it's safe either. If you are at risk on m/c or GD, it might be worth it to continue the drug. If you aren't, it will just be a decision for you and your doctor to make together.

She's great with babies and kids and she's not half bad at the prenatal care either but when it comes to my health thats another story! I'm over weight I'm up at 223 again! (i was 160 all through high school but I also ran track & field!) my doc is one of those that could breath and get prego! and she is a thin as a rake! so her main cure to anyone walking my size young and old is "Loose weight!" yes I do need to but honestly its not for not trying! I eat less than my girls and work out! "B" ... anyways she knows nothing about PCOS and I have tried to get referred and tried to educate her but it hasn't stuck yet! At least I know id I choose to medicte myself it has been done! |

I know that lots of us stay on it at least well into second. Print some articles from reliable sources or get a second opinion.. or if you have an RE discuss it with them as well.. Ultimately it is your choice, even if they "don't" Rx it.

| Stephie Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: PA ![]() ![]() | I have both a Reproductive Endocrinologist (who originally prescribed the met for me) and an OB in different medical practices. They BOTH where insistent that I stay on the metformin the entire pregnancy. I've had my blood glucose tested 3 times and it's come back great all 3 times. A lot of times you just have to keep looking until you find a doctor who is knowledgeable about PCOS. Good Luck

| Registered User | I stayed on met until I was 13 weeks. That was per my OB doctor. I had started to take one 850mg pill instead of two because it was causing some nausea. |

| Blessing on the way! Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: Florida ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | My doc told me that it was up to me whether I stayed on it or not. He didn't really think there was any benefit, but no risk either. I've read a lot of stuff about it helping with m/c and with GD, so I chose to stay on it. I did decrease from 1500 mg to 1000 mg because it was giving me bathroom issues, but I plan on staying on it throughout the pregnancy.

With my son I took 1700 mg of Met a day throughout my pregnancy per Drs. instructions and didn't get GD. I am currently pregnant and will take Met the whole pregnancy again

| Meh! Join Date: May 2004 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | For those of us who are IR...it's perfectly safe to stay on met throughout our pregnancies. It lowers the risk of miscarriage and development of GD. Yes, it's still possible for either to occur, but you are less likely to develop problems while on met. And, for the record, I was on 1000 mg for my last pregnancy and 2000 mg for THIS pregnancy. Both times I failed my 1 hr GTT, but passed the 3 hr GTT with flying colors.
