As far as I know, as long as the hair is dark it should work well. I had a couple of treatments on my face (of laser) and heaps of IPL. It did work on the dark hairs. I have a lot of blonde/white hair mixed with the dark so I cant say Im satisfied. And now a year down the track I have a lot of the darker hairs coming back in but Im sure they are just new ones as my hormones havent improved.

I've had some -- the first time, about 3 years ago, it was only about $65 a treatment and had three treatments. I thought it helped quite a bit. Then that clinic got shut down (for licensing violations, I later learned -- no one in the office was licensed to do laser, I guess) and I just recently had another treatment -- for $400! I can't say I'm disappointed, exactly, just that it was about 10 days ago and all the hair still isn't gone -- with the other laser the hair was gone that day! Also, it's SO expensive. I don't care if that other place wasn't licensed, I still want them back! I guess my opinion would be that it does a decent job if it's cheap enough, but if it's any more than, say, $100 a treatment I would really have to question the value.

I'm doing laser now. I've only had 1 session so far at the end of October and I have my second one the end of this month. I'm not expecting any of the hair to fall out yet. I won't expect that until after the second, maybe third session. So I'm going to say that I'm pleased now. It didn't hurt like my dermatologist said it would, so I was happy about that. It just feels like little sparks and it the setting is a little too high it might feel hot, but it's not too hot. The only drawback I've seen so far is that it is so expensive. 4 sessions cost me $1200. If I need more than 4, it's over $300 a session. As far as the dermatologist is concerned, it's not permanent, so I'll have to go back about 2 times a year for spot treatments. I'm in NJ, so I'm not sure about other states, but the only one that can operate a laser is the doctor. When I was thinking about IPL, the PA was the one doing it and my mother and I were not too thrilled with that. Speak with doctors in your area that do it (probably a dermatologist) and see what they have to say.
I did laser once.... I thought I'd die. I'd rather poke my eyes out with a dull spoon than do it again. I actually had to beg her to stop.... and she acted like I was a wimp. I told her I'd had back surgery using nothing but a mild sedative, wimp I'm NOT. I went home, put frozen peas on my face and took two vicodin. I was still miserable six days later. I ended up with skin that looked and felt like 'chicken skin' also. So about a year later I found a doctor in town (options are limited in Alaska) that uses a pulsed light laser. First treatment did my entire face (no exaggeration here) in less than 30 minutes and the pain was like a sunburn. I went home and put cold compresses on my face the rest of the day off and on, and within 7 days all the hair fell out. Everything he told me was the truth, it was the first time I've ever had a doctor talk to me about excess hair and not been just mortified and he knew more about PCOS than most docs I've ever come across. Not bad for a guy that doesn't treat the disease. I told him my first experience and proceeded to tell me the name of the doctor I had seen. He also said he had so much business from women that went to the other doctor once and never went again he had a little group.... he calls us his 'laser refugees'. Best thing I ever did was find this doctor, and trust him. He changed my whole life. I'm a proud Dr. Means 'laser refugee'!
I had laser five years ago on my face and neck. I was told it would take possibly five sessions. I had two and ended up with a huge scar on my upper lip from where the laser "burnt" the skin. Needless to say, I never went back. This was a dermatologist's office, and a laser-trained R.N. did the procedures. I spent over $2,000 on the two sessions and all of the hair grew back. I would try it again; I believe I just had a bad experience.
