I wasn't diagnosed as hypothyroid until my son was about a year old. Sometimes the thyroid condition is uncovered after pregnancy. Maybe that's what he meant??? I believe that once it's diagnosed it doesn't go away.
I would continue to be monitored for it on an ongoing basis - by your RE or family doctor.
Postpartum thyroiditis is real, and if you have relatives with autoimmune thyroid disease you are at a greater risk for this. Here is a link to some info about it:
