Default Has anyone ever just STOPPED taking their metformin?

So I've been on met for like 2ish months. But I stopped taking it completely last week. I just kept missing doses, and it wasn't doing anything anyway, so I said what the heck and just stopped. Is this bad? I just don't want to have to be on it, ya know? ARGH!

i didn't take it for close to 10 years. you won't die or anything, but it does keep your insulin and metabolism functioning. so, if you don't have a problem with gaining weight rapidly, no, it's not bad :-P

I stopped taking it suddenly as well. I had a bad reaction to an antibiotic, and I didn't know what was causing it, so I just stopped taking both meds. And since I wasn't trying to conceive, I just decided why take a medicine I really don't need right now? I do not have any PCOS symptoms other than never ovulating. I didn't have any kind of bad reaction from quitting Met cold turkey. But just to remind you, as I'm sure you've heard, it usually takes from three to six months for Met to work, if it's going to. So you didn't give it long enough. But if you were having really gnarly side effects, and decided you can't stand it anymore, than I can't blame you. I just had a couple days of bad tummy problems, when I first started, but if it had persisted, I would have had to quit, since it was petty yucky.

I stopped because I was tired of having so much trouble waking up and feelings so yucky in the mornings. But I noticed in just a month that I gained quite a bit around the stomach and started losing more hair in front. Sigh. So I'm back on it. I take it now at dinnertime instead and it seems to help a lot.

I wasn't having any side effects from it at all, just those first couple of days of yuckiness. I'm afraid of gaining more weight if I stay off of it though. I'm trying to lose weight now, and I don't want my decision to stop it to hinder that effort. I have no idea if it will or not. Maybe I should go back on. ARGH! I don't know!

I didn't think it was doing anything for me. Boy did I learn I was wrong when I went off of it.

I recommend going back on it, honestly. If you go on the extended release version, you only have to remember to take it once per day.

I stopped taking mine after a year and a half. I got tired of spending my life in the bathroom. I asked my gp about the extended release and he said it wouldn't make any difference. I see my ob/gyn in 2 weeks and we're going to talk about it. Since I'm not trying to get pregnant any time soon, I'm going to ask if she thinks I still need it. If she does, I'm going to have her prescribe the XR. I'm mad at the gp anyway.

I stopped because the side effects were making me feel worse than the issues of PCOS ever did. Unfortunately my doctors just don't believe there is any other medicine that will work for that condition - so I tried to do it naturally... Just finding out about Inositol so I can't testify but I am trying that now...

Hi Mrs., to answer your original question, I have gone off Met. many a time. One time for a CT scan with dye (because of risk of kidney damage, they don't want Met in you for a few days), and many times for my own sanity because of relentless bowel action that would develop on higher doses for me. I always told the dr. within a day or two of going off so they would know.

Each time I go back on I have to build up slowly...I'm only on 500mg. a day now, and tolerating but not loving it. This time around I have some trouble with queasiness, esp. in AM.

If your dr. wants you on, and you have minimal trouble, I'd stay on! It sounds almost like you kept forgetting to take doses, and that it was like stopping and starting again with the side effects? That would get old very quickly! Have you ever thought about carrying your Met. in a pill strip in your purse and maybe having an alarm watch tucked in with it (or a cell phone that will give you a daily task reminder alarm?). I've struggled in past with a busy schedule that had me away from the house when I needed to take mine.

Yes I was forgetting a lot of doses, but I wasn't having trouble with side effects thankfully. I just feel almost like I don't even NEED it...but I guess I didn't give it long enough to work. I do have a task reminder dealie on my phone, I suppose I could set it...problem is, I usually just turn it off when it beeps at me and still don't do what it told me to do! LOL

It didnt really bother me when I stopped, nor did I notice anything drastic. I have gained some weight back though (dont know if it was because of that or I got Lazy again) But I did realize that it is SO much harder for me to go back on it! The first time I started it, I didnt get any s/e and now well I know when that drug is in me. I feel so yucky. But I know I need it!

Good Luck!

MrsAreal,
I went off met suddenly ....because i was trying to get into a clinical trial (which i did not end up doing..) I was just tired of taking ANY meds (when i got pregnant i wasn't taking any meds either)
Honestly, i think it depends on if your body. i never gained any extra weight...and i even got pregnant naturally.

I noticed I was gaining more weight around the middle and my hair was thinning more up front. Now that I've been on the Glumetza for a few days again, I'm realizing how huge my appetite was, especially for sweet and carby things, when I was off it too.

It's going much better taking it regularly at dinnertime.
