Proud army wife - I'm taking Repliva (prescription highly absorbable iron) and have noticed an immediate benefit to reduce sheds.

proudarmywife,

I did a lot of research, but I don't think my condition is related to PCOS, meaning that I don't have excess body hair, high DHT nor testosterone levels....so I cannot really advise if this is your case....I never lost hair at the crown, just all over. However, I know that acne medication with preformed vit A like accutane causes massive hairloss & birth defects if you're pregnant. I stopped using Retin A which is a topical form of vit a....I'm not sure if it had a role to play in my hair loss. One thing most women have in common is having menses, bleeding means you need to up iron level more than guys....this is very tricky...you need very high dosage of iron (as only about 5-10 percent of it is absorbed) to get to 40 which is where shedding stops and then to 70 for regrowth (iron deficient means you're below 12 which is a stupid lower limit anyway), many studies have been done to prove that iron increases both diameter and regrowth in women who have low serum iron. So not to forget, with iron, you must take vitamin C (orange juice) on an empty stomach, otherwise no results. Also avoid tea and milk when taking iron. All the B vitamins are a safe bet as well as fish oil, which is nothing short of a miracle oil. Also about shampoos and even topical hair treatments, waste of money, if not dangerous (rogaine causes problems with high bloiod pressure individuals)...also anemia as in my case can be hereditary, but not uncontrollable !!
Also, I can't recommend anything specific, as I am in Korea and the supplements are generic local brands. I did try an imported low dosage time-release iron supplement, totally ineffective, almost gave up on iron....go for high dosage and keep up potassium and zinc (in bananas, etc).

So keep up the research and safe treatment.

ive been on spiro 50mg for a few months now and it seems to be slowing the process. does this low of a dosage usually help, or is it just the first stage used by a dr to increase it to 200mg eventually? ( i saw in one of the first posts that 200mg was known to work).

I noticed that my scalp was getting very itchy and flakey. Then I noticed that my hair was actually falling out. It would be all over my pillow in the mornings and come out in the showere as well. Alot of women on soulcysters were suggesting to treat your hair with apple cider vinegar. It was cheap so I figured what the h%$#.... I was very fustrated the first 2 weeks of use. But then it started to work. I noticed less and less hair on my pillows in the morning. My head was still very itchy though. I now use neutrogena daily shampoo and herbal essance conditioner for long hair. (red bottle) and the apple cider vinegar once a week. It's been working for me since December. Sometimes the simple things work the best

Topically Organic apple cider vinegar.

I used 2tblsp per 16oz of water everyday for 2 weeks.
Then everyother day for 2 weeks.
And now once a week. (4tblsp per 16 oz of water, I have very long hair)
Put it on while your hair is dry for 15 to 20 mins. You can wrap your head with a towel and shave your legs or something while you wait. Rinse and follow with your normal routine. Or if you have a itchy scalp like I do I recommend the neutrogena daily 2-in-1 t-gel and herbal essence conditioner. I use the one for long hair, but anyone will work. It's worked for me. Hope it helps. Remember to be paitent, it's not going to work overnight.

Yes, I use organic. It doesn't smell all that great but what vinegar does. But after awhile you won't even notice the smell.
