Default Has anyone had a Hystosalpinogram?

I am so pleased
After 6 months of trying and failing to get a Hystosalpinogram, I finally have an appointment on friday morning. (my doctor wont put me on clomid till I have one)
But can I ask, has anyone had one, what it is like?
I know that it will be intrusive (Im used to it, the amount of fertility tests Ive had) but I have read about pain and cramping. I was going to go on my own on the bus but am now scared of coming out, feeling really bad, and not being able to get home. should I ask my husband to take me?

This is definately a step in the right direction, after 2 1/2 years of trying, being fobbed off and having depression because of it, I finally feel like the NHS are actually trying to help me, lol

Smile Hystosalpinogram HSG

I had a Hystosalpinogram in 2008, I didn't know what to expect, so I guess I expected the worst. But the nurses I had really helped and explained everything. You wear a hospital gown. Then you lie flat(on your back) on a bed, and an x-ray machine is directly above your lower stomach/pelvic area. While you are on your back your legs are in stirups(the lights are dimmed,if that helps).

The doctor then explains you will feel pressure & cramping. The pressure is from the dye that is being inserted with what looks like a turkey baster. It just feels like air filling in your fallopian tubes. This doesn't hurt, it just feels weird & a little uncomfortable, and if your tubes are blocked dr. says this will help open them.

After the dye is inserted the dr. has you tilt your pelvis to right side/left side. Then the x-ray machine takes pictures of your tubes, from all angles.
My cramping didn't start until the end of taking the x-ray pics. It feels like period cramps only more rapid and alittle more intense. The only way I can explain it is if you have ever eaten hot hot salsa(and had to go #2). Kind of like those kind of stomach/pelvic cramps. Sorry so graphic.
The cramps were uncomfortable for several minutes afterwards only. The dr. requires you to lie there for about 15 minutes. Your given a pad and they send you on your way. The cramping gradually goes away after an hour or two. I think the cramping is from the dye naturally expelling something foreign out of you.

I was able to drive myself home. Yes, there is a little discomfort, but it is worth it. I am now on my first cycle of Clomid this month. This procedure will get you to your next step.

Good Luck & God Bless

Hi
Just thought I'd add my experience......
I had a hysterosalpingogram on the NHS a few years ago.
I would advice you to have a lift home afterwards as during and after it I was in pain, cramping and bleeding. Of course, your experience may be totally different, but I'm not going to lie to you. It hurt, but it was worth it to know my tubes are fine...........LOL if only the ovaries would work.....

Hi
Thanks for the advice, I have now had it done, but I didnt really have a pleasent experience of it.
The procedure was fine, the tube going in was blooming painful, but the rest was ok. It was after that I had the most pain, the xray woman said I should have taken the day off from work, but stupid me thought I would be alright, I was wrong, I got sent home from work after two hours (I am a teacher), the pain was too much I started crying and having a panic attack. My husband had to pick me back up from work and I spent the rest of the day on the sofa asleep.
I think the experience is different for everyone, but I would recommend that if you get it done, that you take the day off work and rest (also get someone to take you/be with you).
I definately think the pain is worth it, for the knowledge factor.
Just a thought, they didnt rock me from side to side, but I did have to do an xray lying on my tummy.

Dont wanna freak u out.. lol.. BUT when i had it done the first time my tubes spasm'd and it hurt so bad i almost passed out... BUT i'm a sissy and have a low tolerance for pain... BUT i went in to have them unblocked incase they didnt spasm and they were indeed blocked... they gave me some really good drugs that lasted about 20 minutes and they did the same thing they did the first time and it didnt hurt at all.. a little cramp... a little worse than a period cramp (well mild ones) but it wasnt too bad. If they are blocked then its most likely going to hurt cuz there is no place for the stuff to go. But if they arent blocked then it should be pretty smooth for u... Good Luck..
