Default Has anyone had luck with alternative therapies?

I have been diagnosed with mild PCOS and I am not looking forward to taking medicine every day forever. Has anyone out there had any luck with alternative therapies - acupuncture, acupressure, etc.? I am willing to try anything that doesn't involve taking drugs every day. I have lost 47 pounds since January so I'm hoping that this will help. My period is pretty much every 5 weeks now...trying to get it down to every 4 weeks. Also, my hair is really falling out on top of my head, though my total testosterone was only 12. The only thing that came back abnormal on my tests was the DHEAS and was told by my naturopath to try ground up flax seeds every day and vegetables rich in beta-carotene. Anyway, I hope someone out there has had some good luck with alternative therapies and would like to share their stories!

Thanks-

Maria in Chicago

Maria, I have no personal knowledge or experience with alt therapies. We do have a section here at SC dedicated to this very topic, so perhaps you could look around there.

I've had different things work for me temporarily, like vitex to help bring on ovulation, and such, but I know I need to make a drastic life style change with consistent exercise and much healthier eating, (and I already eat better than the general public...) Kat has had a lot of success supressing the pcos from what I understand, and it takes a lot of hard work... (she is such a good example of that!)

Congrats on the weight loss!
Getting your periods every 5 weeks is great too.
How is the ground up flax working for you? Have you noticed any changes since you started?

I'm treating PCOS with a low carb diet, avoiding all sugars and artifical sweetners, exercise (cardio & lifting weights), vitamins/supplements and herbs. I'm also seeing a naturopath and I think she is great.

I haven't tried the ground up flax seeds yet, but there are a lot of things I have to avoid because I'm still nursing. I can't take vitax until then because it's contraindicated. I will certainly let you know if I see anything with the flax seeds. Thanks so much for all the feedback!
I love my naturopath. She's in Chgo if anyone is interested, though she's pretty pricey and doesn't accept insurance. But, i find it's worth it!
