Default Has anyone stopped taking Met?

I was wondering if it is safe to stop Met cold turkey. I have started seeing a dr who practices nutritional medicine and she has put me on some things that should help level out my blood sugar and she says I should not need Met and that I can just stop taking it if I want. Does anyone know if it is safe to just stop taking it? I was just kind of wanting a 2nd opinion and to see if anyone else has stopped taking it cold turkey. TIA.

I think the package says not to stop taking it without consulting a doctor. Other than that, I don't know.

If you stop taking it your symptoms will come back. Since you are trying other alternatives you should be fine. I wouldn't stop taking it for Diabetic purposes. My doc took me off it cold turkey a couple of years ago, he said it was alright. But my symptoms came back quick.

Same thing happened with me as with Ericka - I was taken off cold turkey. I didn't notice any problems from that, but I was amazed at how quickly all of my symptoms showed again.

I was switched to the XR version and I really like it.

Good luck with what you are trying now, please let us know how things go for you!!!!

I stopped taking met on my own (told dr I was going to but I decieded on my own to...long story) at the time it was the best because of the long story part but the worst because yes I got all the symptoms back...but other than that I had no problems. I am now hoping that I can soon find a way to afford to get back on met, because I am ready to continue with treatment now that I have dealt with and am ok with taking pills again.

Hey Melissa, well I have a lot of problems right now including a systemic yeast infection (not vaginal but in my gut) that comes from taking antibiotics all these years for every little thing and eating sugar which feeds the yeast infection. My body is not producing the enzymes it needs to digest my food. I also have a fatty, enlarged liver, high triglycerides and cholesterol, high blood pressure and of course IR, PCOS....all that.

Right now I have started taking a vitamin called Glucobalance and one called Vanaphage (these replace the Metformin and are for helping to balance blood sugar). I am also taking Vitamin E, Salmon Oil, CoQ 10, Ness # 2 (food enzymes to aid in digestion), Milk Thistle (for my liver), Paraclear (just temporarily in case I have parasites which she said most people these days do from eating out and such), Candistatin (temporarily to kill the systemic yeast infection) and Ignatia Hommacord & L-Tyrosine (for anxiety and depression). I am also on a very strict diet of fish, chicken, eggs, vegetables (no starchy ones like corn, peas, carrots, etc), cottage cheese and nuts (almonds, walnuts and pecans) only. I have to eat at least one salad per day with only vinagrette dressing (preferably with olive oil as she wants me to have a lot of olive oil).

She says most of the vitamins/supplements and the diet are temporary. She feels that she can get me healthy and where I need to be (lose weight, regulate blood sugar, lower triglycerides and cholesterol, get PCOS under control and get rid of the other problems) and then I can probably just take a good multivitamin, extra vitamin C and salmon oil and wont have to take prescriptions any more. It is hard but I know I can do it. I just have to keep telling myself that I am worth it....my health and happiness is worth it.

And, the weight is already falling off. I have lost 8 pounds since Monday, the 15th....I am no longer having cravings and I don't just sit around and think about food and what can I eat anymore. I am probably not eating enough but I am never hungry.

Mandi

Wow, good for you! I hope it works out well in your favor. I asked because I have a scrip for Met, but, I am just really hesistant to take it. Not really because of the poopy problems it gives me, lol, but I am not a big fan of taking things that can cause such harmful side effects. And it's questionable if it would even help. So, I am trying to look for a more natural approach. I too, have high cholesterol, my blood pressure has gotten higher, IR, and family history of heart disease. I don't want to get those problems, and I nkow Met may help, but I just don't like putting those kinds of things into my body. Does that make sense??? have you found it starting to work yet??? keep me posted.

Well, I can already tell that my diet is starting to help stabilize my blood sugar. Right now it is staying in the 90s whether I have eaten or not. Ideally I would like to see it stay in the 80s. I have not noticed a difference yet as I just started taking the pills but I think the Ignatia Hommacord & L-Tyrosine (for anxiety and depression) is already starting to help. I will keep you updated!

Also, if you decide to start taking Met, you need to take extra folic acid/b12/b6. Check out this thread for a little known warning about Met.

I stopped met for four days while on a vacation (long story). I felt fine. However, by day 3 I noticed a marked increase in acne and hair. I'm hoping to get it back under control soon.
