Default Has anyone tried the Hair Club folks?

Okay, ladies, I need some input. I've been watchin' the late-night infomercials for Hair Club for Men (and Women -- lol), and was wonderin' if any of you had had any experience with 'em. What was the service you had done and the cost of it? How long did it last/how often did it need to be repeated? Were you satisfied with the results and/or the attention you received?

My hair is so thin on top that I look ridiculous. I've let my hair grow long (a little past shoulder length) even though I'd actually look better with it short, 'cause that's one of the few things helpin' me to feel feminine these days -- havin' hair to flip around. LOL I just feel like, with it so thin on top, I must look like the comedian Gallagher. I'm about ready to either start livin' in a ball cap or shave it all off and buy wigs. After seein' the infomercials, though, I thought The Hair Club might be a viable alternative.

TIA for the info!

Hi, Weezy,

Yep, those Hair Club ads make it all sound so promising. I spent an hour myself once watching them.

Warning, I've never heard anything in REAL life about Hair Club that was good. The concensus seems to be, run, don't walk, and make sure you have your hands on your wallet. I don't have personal experience myself, but I've heard lots of unhappy ladies.

Do some research at http://www.heralopecia.com/forum/ and http://groups.msn.com/WigSupport/general.msnw Tons of info and support at both those sites.

You'll hear the lowdown on Hair Club, and you'll learn about better options that won't wreck the hair you have left and take all your money. And there are much better choices! I wear a hairpiece myself, and I'm quite happy with it.

Thanks, StarMaiden. I'll definitely check out those sites. I had a feelin' it wasn't all it professed to be, but I figured if ever there was a group of women to ask, this would be it! Thanks so much for the info!

about a year ago, i met with a plastic surgeon in the uk. i wanted to see about implants, and she said that generally speaking, women should not get hair transplants, though i don't think this is 100% for all women. the reason that she said was that they know for sure that for men, the hair on the lower back of their head is not suceptible to DHT, and therefore can be transplanted, but she said that they don't have evidence of this yet with women. she told me that the success rate for women w/ transplants is significantly lower (e.g. she said most men that get transplants keep about 70-80% of the transplanted hair, while on women that average is only 40%.)

just wanted to share this.

I went in for a consultation at the place that my husband had a hair transplant done several years ago. They looked at my scalp and said I did not have any areas where they hair was thick enough to be suitable "donor hair." My only choice was a hair piece. Apparently they shave the area of your head that the hair piece will attach to. The hair is mounted on a base that is so thin it is like a onion peel and you can't even find the edge of it when it is attached. They adhere this to your bare scalp. In six weeks, you go in and they reattach it after shaving the area again.

You have to purchase two hair pieces - one to wear and one to have in for servicing. They are made with real human hair and can be colored and permed or whatever to match your own hair. At that time, they were running around $3,000 each (if I remember correctly!) The doctor said he had one female patient who was 90% bald and her husband didn't even know!

I have had laser light therapy - at over $1000 - and I didn't see any real results.

Thanks for your replies, tess987 and innkeepermommy. I've about chalked this idea up to bein' too good to be true. I'm not about to let anybody shave what hair I DO have on top! LOL I'm just not that masochistic! Besides, anybody who is important to me at all doesn't seem to have as much a problem with my thinnin' as I do. All the other folks can go ... Well, let's just say that their opinions don't mean very much to me.

I guess it's just finally time I got off my duff and found a doctor and get some meds. I just dread goin'...

Anyway, thanks again, ever'body, for your time and thoughts. You've been tons of help!
