Hello,
I found on the internet (while searching for something new to combat this acne without BCP or meds for the millionth time) something called the oil cleansing method or OCM. Basically, you clean your face with a mixture of castor oil and olive oil based on the idea that oil attracts oil. I have seen both rave reviews where their cystic acne went away and some that state they got cystic acne after using it.
I am just wondering if anyone on here has tried it and if so, what type of results did you see?
I've never tried the OCM but i do use shu uemura's balancing oil face wash. it's gentle enough and it does take off all my makeup as well. i really do enjoy using it and i've noticed that my face is always soft and even noticed my oil production go down just a little.
the only down side, if any i've noticed is that i still have a lot of whiteheads around my chin/cheek area. i'm not sure if the oil is not enough to exfoliate or what. but i've noticed that whatever new breakouts i get if i wash it with the oil wash the pimples seem to go away faster. idk....just my experience.
I use DHC's oil facewash and it's been...meh. I am also using topicals and so it's hard for me to weigh in. I will say that my face is more consistent (less radical breakouts) than when I was using a traditional facewash (like Neutrogena). I also use jojoba oil as a moisturizer. It certainly hasn't made me break out.
I also haven't heard of the OCM, but I started using Clarins Face Oil for Combination Skin quite a few years ago when I had some acne and dry/oily skin and it balanced my skin out really well. I've switched to Jurlique, because I prefer organically grown/manufactured, but I'm really happy using oil on my face. I still get the odd breakout, but on the whole my skin is much much better.
The only thing I use to wash my face is coconut oil. I've tried olive oil but it broke my face out badly. Castor oil seems to work fine though I haven't used it for an extended period of time.

i use a sort of modified version of this...i use almond oil & a cotton pad to remove my makeup and it works great. i live in colorado, which is very DRY, and find that using the hot water dries my skin out a little. if i feel like i need to "wash" my face, i like the weleda rose cleanser--it's an oil based cleanser and it helps to balance things out (plus it smells pretty). i then follow with rose hydrosol.
the basis behind this is that like attracts like...meaning oil will attract oil, without disturbing the acid balance that soap destroys. it probably seems countintuitive for people with oily skin to do this, but that's the theory =)
it's strange, i used to have really oily skin but as i get older, i have more problems with dry skin...finding a balance is really important to me and treating my skin gently works best (i have sensitive skin). i wish i'd known about this when i had oily skin, because i think it would've been really helpful.
i'm also a big believer in exfoliating my skin, which the warm water & washcloth could help with, i guess, but i found the washcloth & hot water too irritating for my skin. what i do is just mix a little fine table sugar with a few drops of almond oil or cleanser (not soap, though) and genly exfoliate with that about once or twice a month. gently being the key =) you're not trying to remove paint!
I have tried this, but found it hard to do the steaming part. It did make my face feel amazing, but didn't feel like it improved my acne problems at all.

I have used DHC's Deep Cleansing Oil plus their Olive Virgin Oil as a moisturizer, and I love it. The Deep Cleansing Oil removes all of my makeup without leaving a residue, and when I follow that with either the Mild or the Pure soap, my skin feels and looks fabulous.
If you request the samples for an additional $2, you get samples of Deep Cleansing Oil, Mild Soap and Olive Virgin Oil, and the samples are generous enough that you get a few days' use of them.

I don't have cystic acne, but I've been using an olive oil cleanser from HSN that I LOVE. At first I thought it would leave a greasy film, but it doesn't.
