hey

it has never been brought up to me either. if you're curious you should ask about it next time u have a gyno appointment. I imagine if it were that important your gyno would have already brought it up.

I also have never had a scan or ultra sound. I guess there hasn't been any need for one - it does seem odd.

My old gyno, oddly enough is the one who gave me ultrasounds during every freaking appointment. I ended up not seeing him anymore because he was a moron when it came to PCOS and ignored my complaints and symptoms.

My new gyno has given me one cat-scan and nothing since then (about a year.)

I guess if you aren't complaining about pain in the ovaries, they won't scan you to check for anything. I was complaining because the BCP pills were giving me horrible PMS cramps, all month long. As soon as I quit taking them the cramps went away. I decided to stop taking them to see what would happen after the scans showed nothing of concern, although my ovaries were said to be 2-3 times normal size due to being covered in cysts.

I haven't had any pain or anything so that's probably why I haven't had a new ultrasound or scan.

When my dr suspected I had pcos in May, he had me run over and do a vag u/s. It wasn't pleasant, but it was fast. My left ovary has 5-6 cysts. My right only 1-2. So one is worse than the other. it was pretty neat to see, but at first I thought it was cancer... I had a friend die in Feb from cervical cancer and just had a friend have a full hysterectomy because of ovarian cancer. And all of a sudden in all the grey stuff I saw these big black dots. I started sweating and almost fainted. The technician reassured me and said, "It jsut looks like pcos, not that uncommon." Then he ordered the blood work...

They did another scan this month, but it was to see if I had a mature follie (and I did). I don't think it's a big deal unless they may need to do something about ovary pain or a really large cyst or something...

I think it's a good idea but definitely shouldn't be necessary. When I was dx'ed by a NP, she only did a u/s and nothing else to dx me. Nice that I got the dx, unfortunately she never bothered to order b/w for me and now I know I have untreated IR, high testosterone, etc.

I didn't have an u/s until I started ttc. My PCOS was diagnosed via blood work and symptoms.

Do you mean a transvaginal ultrasound? I've had it done, the referral for it was made by a reproductive endo. You don't have to get it done, since pcos can be diagnosed by other symptoms, but just wanted to let you know that it's not painful. It only takes a few minutes and I honestly found it less invasive than a pap smear. I'm glad I had it done, it just again cofirmed my pcos, I had lots of little cysts on both ovaries and my ovaries were enlarged. (even though you don't have to have those symptoms to have pcos) I want to get it done again in a few months, after being on metformin for over a year and having regular cycles to see if the cysts are gone now or if there are less of them, would be interesting to see.

i mean just any scan in general on the ovaries really, i just found it a bit strange that it had never been brought up in discussion with my doc.

im a very 'typical' pcos patient and have all the usual symptoms so i guess thats prob why i havnt needed one but i might ask about it cos im curious to how bad/good my ovaries are.

I had a dermatologist years ago that wanted me to get it done, I was seeing him for severe, cystic acne and he suspected pcos, but I was only a teen and just didn't feel ready for it. A couple years later I saw another Dr (pcp/gp) and requested it, I was told theres no point since you already know you have pcos based on your other symptoms.

I would encourage you to have it done, even if just out of curiousity.

The u/s doesn't necessarily mean anything, though, as you can have PCOS and not have any cysts on your ovaries, so that's probably why your doc has mentioned it to you. I was diagnosed via bloodwork. I've had one u/s but that was b/c I'm TTC and he wanted to see if I had any mature follicles (nope, just a lot of little ones).

I had an ultrasound of my ovaries first, and that's what led my ob-gyn to send me for further testing. I had my blood drawn and got my test results back a few days later confirming PCOS. I guess maybe your ob-gyn doesn't feel the need to scan you if you have been confirmed with the dx by blood work. You could always call their office and ask if you're concerned about it.

I would say, yes, it is necessary. How else can they see/confirm follicles or cysts on your ovaries? I would think this would be the very first order of business when dx'd. This is what my Endo did. I had 2 ultrasounds. No follicles found. He said sometimes an ultrasound won't even be able to reveal follicles as they can be so very finite. Also, they have to do an ultrasound to explore/see your adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidney's. If there are tumors there then it causes all kinds of problems relative to PCOS. You can't see those either without an u/s. I'm not trying to conceive and he knows that...I just think mine is very thorough and wanted to rule out everything before he dx'd me as having PCOS.
