Default Have you ever heard that not taking your thyroid meds could cause Dementia...

down the road?

I seen my dr yesterday. I admitted to her that I sometimes forget to take my Levo. she said that is not good. That in 20 yrs or so I could develop dementia from not taking my meds properly. Has anyone else ever heard this before?

I know that it does affect your brain is you miss meds, and Yes I guess later in life could cause brain problems. Try to remember to take your meds, I bought a pill holder for 7 days so I wouldn't forget, but I am on armour thyroid and generic Levo now, feeling great remembering EVERYTHING!!!! GL

I notice I become forgetful/ditzy NOW if I forget to take my meds. I could see how that would impact later life too.

Default It does cause problems

Hi I am knew here and this post jumps out at me. I was diagnosed in 2004 with PCOS and hypothyroidism. I was immediately started on Levoxyl and took it dutifully, even while in the hospital giving birth to my son, and ALOT happened during and after my delivery. I almost died due to anaphelactic shock and suffered from anxiety disorder BAD. It did not show right away but around Christmas 2005, when Chayse was 7 months old, I got lazy and did not get my perscription filled. After 3 weeks, I went from holding it together to ready to jump off a bridge and I was just spiraling downhill even worse. My doc and therapist that I ended up having to see (for Post partum anxiety) said the reason it was so extremely bad was because I wasn't taking my thyroid pill. Your thyroid is your main hormone distributor and once hypothyroid patients start it, they can NEVER stop becasue they will suffer extreme hormonal, and mental instabilities, so I guess dementia could be one of them. I hope this helps.

Missing a dose here and there now will not affect you later...it's the lack of thyroid hormone in your body for very long time that affects you, like months and years. Patients with thyroid cancer (and sometimes other thyroid conditions) are required to stop taking their meds for nuclear medicine testing for about 3 weeks. During this time I get forgetful, cold, exhausted, and downright cranky. Don't fret about missing a few doses...you won't be crazy because of it!
