Default Having a D&C Tomorrow...Nervous!

Hi Ladies-

Last we I discovered I had a blighted ovum- I should have been almost 8 weeks pg, but I was measuring at 5 weeks. We saw the sac but nothing in it at all. Because I was closely monitored while on Clomid, there is no way I mis-dated my pregnancy by weeks.

We've monitored my HCG levels all this past week and my numbers are rollarcoastering- up and down but still in the 6000s because the gestational sac is still growing. I had a followup u/s on Wednesday- that simply reconfirmed the blighted ovum diagnosis.

I had a long talk with my ob/gyn about my options. I had a m/c last year and I waited so I could m/c naturally. Thankfully the physical m/c happened 2 weeks after finding out our pregnancy wasn't viable- but my numbers were much lower (never got above 360). My doc said it could take a long time for this pregnancy to pass since my numbers are still not going down. I choose to go with a D&C for a couple reasons- 1) I can't mentally deal with waiting weeks and 2) I want a tissue analysis done since this is my second m/c in a row.

Today I went in to see my doctor- she inserted something in my cervix to dialate it (sorry- can't remember the name, began with an "L"). Ladies- this HURT. Now I'm really nervous about my D&C. I know I'll be knocked out- but I'm still very anxious. Can anyone share their D&C experiences with me?

Thanks,
Heather

I don't have any experience with the D&C. But I know that whatever they inserted might hurt as it has to expand to open up the cervix. I hope that the remainder of the procedures don't hurt and that they find a reason for the recurring m/c. I think there might also be some cramping and spotting afterwards but you can take tylenol/advil for that. HTH That's all I know!

Hugs, Liz

Heather {{{{HUGS}}}} I'm so sorry.

I had a D&C w/ my second loss. I didn't have anything inserted into my cervix before so I can't say what it was or how it will be. I went in a couple hours before the D&C. Filled out some paperwork. When back (DH was w/ me) & they put in an IV. That was the worst part b/c my veins aren't very good as it is... In the IV they put something in to relax me. A few minutes later I kissed my DH bye & was rolled back in to another room. I remember seeing my dr & remember seeing the inside of the room but don't remember anything after that. I woke up to an asthma attack. I stayed there for about an hr or so just to make sure that everything was ok. Went home & rested the rest of the day. I took a few days off from work as well. My situation was a little bit different b/c I was pg w/ quads so I bled for a long time (I think it was about 3 months or so). I did get an antibiotic, musle relaxer & pain killers which helped greatly. Tylenol didn't even come close to touching my pain & I have never known anyone that had a D&C to just take tylenol. The pain was for about a week or so & after that it was just the bleeding that was annoying. I bled for a couple weeks & then after that it was sparadic spotting. I would spot heavy for the entire day one day & the next day would be nothing. Day after that I would spot lightly. It was very strange but my dr said it was all normal. No sex or tampons until your follow up (I think it was a couple weeks after the D&C). After that both are fine.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I didn't have chromosomal testing on the tissue, just had what they normally do & everything was normal.

My question is, why wouldn't your dr give you the methotrexate shot rather than making you get a D&C. The methotrexate shot is for ectopics but I had a suspected ectopic (rollercoasting betas) & still got the methotrexate shot. Just a question to ask... Granted, the D&C is actually much less "tramatic" than the methotrexate shot but the recovery was much quicker for me than w/ the D&C. I had to get a methotrexate shot w/ my 4th loss.

I had a D&C two years ago. I was knocked out for it. They did not stretch my cervix out before hand though. The actual procedure was not a big deal. I really felt fine afterwards. Had some cramping and my legs hurt (you don't even want to know how they have you positioned).
I was a rare case because two days after my D&C I ended up getting really sick. I was put back into the hospital for two days. They think that I was just coming down with the flu. I guess they say that because they could not find what was wrong with me. I had a high fever. I was already on antibotics two days before the D&C to help prevent an infection. I then had to stay home for a week after that.
Like I said, I was rare case. My doctor had never had anyone have any complications from a D&C. I always for some reason fall into that 1% who will have a complication. The procedure is not bad at all. I am sorry that you are going through this. You and your family are in my prayers.

Kim

Hi ladies-

Liz- thanks for the encouragement! Surprisingly, what ever my doctor inserted today doesn't hurt as much any more (thankfully!!).

Traci- I'm so sorry for all your losses! I had a friend of mine who had a D&C with triplets so, like you, she had extended bleeding. My doctor doesn't seem to think that will be the case with me- so we'll see. As for why we didn't do the methotrexate shot- mainly because we want the complete tissue analysis done since this is my second loss. Plus, I was told that after you've been pg for 45 days or more, there is a chance the shot will not do the job. (Off topic- I swear I'm not a cyber stalker, but are you Shybride from the WC? I'm heatctron there- I recognized your first name and the name you picked out for your daughter! )

kcal- Ugh- I'm so sorry you got so sick! That's just miserable. I'm glad to hear the D&C itself wasn't that bad for you!

Thanks again for sharing your experiences with me- you all did help to calm my fears. I'll try to post this weekend and let you know how I made out.

-Heather

First I want to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I just lost my 2 angel on 2/14/05. I didn't need the D&C this time but last yr I did. I was 14w 2d last time so it might be different I'm not sure. I was in no pain at all after or b~4. As my story is different than yours. My water broke on Monday night. I went to the ER. I was admitted then sent home Tuesday night and told I would m/c at home. Wednesday morning I woke up and felt I needed to have a bowel movement when I "thought" I was done (turns out I didn't "go") I wiped and felt my baby's cord still attached to me. VERY little blood. My mom had to "deliver" my baby and we had to bring the baby with us to the hospital. While there I still was not bleeding and Dr's were checking me like 20 min or so. So that night I wasn't even given a choice. All I was given for "pain" was Motrin. It must have worked cuz I was in no pain. Well except my broken heart HTH

Yes I am! You cyber stalker you! I was 8 wks along when I had the methotrexate shot & I did have to have a second shot (double dose of the second shot) but after that it did work. It ended up going faster than my spotting & betas w/ the D&C. Sometimes it can take some time for the betas to go down after a D&C depending on how high they were.

A warning about when you get the analysis you will also find out what the sex of the baby was. Just warning you b/c I've heard many women say they didn't know that & they didn't want to know what they were having. If your dr gets the results & you don't want to know, tell the dr beforehand.

Hi ladies-

Just wanted to let you know I made it thru the D&C just fine. It was a long day at the hospital (surgery was supposed to be at 2, but it got pushed back to 8:30), but the procedure itself went well.

My doctor has me on an antibiodic and some medicine to keep the bleeding to a minimum. I really don't feel bad at all- slightly crampy and tired. Honestly, the spot where they tried (and failed) to put the IV in my hand hurt worse then any place else.

Thanks so much for your support and encouragement.

Heather, I am sorry that I got to this too late. I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking about you. I have had both a D&C and a natural, and for me the D&C was much easier to deal with. I hope that holds true for you too.

Big hugs.
