So those of you who have had an HSG What should I expect? Those who had a lot of pain/discomfort Do you have a high or low pain threshold? Do you get severe cramps before/during AF and how does it compare? (mine are so bad I have to take 4 advil and I get pain all the way into my legs occasionally they are so bad they make me vomit and I have a very high pain threshold) I am just curious because I have heard everything from slight discomfort to worse pain of life.

Personally, I did not think it was that bad. My tubes were open, but I have heard if you have blockages in your tubes it can hurt really bad. It was painful I wont lie, but managable. I think my pain threshold is probably normal. My af cramps can be bad but nothing a few advil can't cure. The pain was like really bad af cramps. It only lasted for about 20 seconds. After I was still cramping but not too bad.
Good luck and hope you get good results.

Good to know hopefully it won't be so bad for me because I am used to very painful cramps.

I have a low pain threshold. In fact, I have fainted several times during paps!!! So my ob/gyn gave me some mild sedatives to take the edge off. I also took some motrin beforehand just in case. My hubby goes with me and holds my hand every time I get my blood taken. They now lay me down for that, because I have fainted from that too! So I'm a big baby.
I had discomfort and pain of course, but that was over within minutes of the HSG. So, yes, it was painful, but quick. It wasn't so bad that I would be scared to do it again - I would do it if I had to. I had cramping for the rest of the day. I hardly ever get AF cramps, just bloating and discomfort. The cramps from the HSG were worse than what I feel during AF, but not unbearable. I could have gone back to work if I needed to.
There is another thread on here that just recently started about this same thing. You should look it up. Sorry, I'd give you the link if I knew how! :-)

Don't feel bad about having to lie down for blood work. They lie me down too. Although not because of pain. They lie me down because I passed out during my first round of blood work in June. My blood pressure is a little on the low side and drops when they take my blood. When I passed out it had dropped to 90/50.

For me the HSG hurt way less than the IUI, which apparently is abnormal so I don't know how much my experience will hold for you.
I took 800 mg of ibuprofen before the procedure - the catheter was the worst part for me but the actual dye injection wasn't so bad at all. I felt totally normal within an hour after it was over (mild cramping before then).

June - Clomid 50, 100, 150 - thinned lining & no follies

August - Femara 2.5, trigger - bfn
September - Off for cysts
October - Femara 5, trigger, IUI - 2ww
I had an HSG done. I took 600mg Ibprofen before the procedure. For me also the worst part was the catheter being put in place and the dye being injected. It felt VERY crampy. I did feel like I could have passed out but it was over with so quickly. Thankfully everything looked normal. After removing the catheter I felt normal and no pain. Good Luck!
My hsg went horribly. It was extremely painful because they tried three times and could not get the catheter through my cervix, there may be something wrong with it. I have an appointment with an obgyn today who is going to put me on vicodin and vallume, check my cervix then dialate me. I was told it is going to be very painful. Then at 2:00 I will be going in to try another HSG. I am very scared. I am also emotionally drained I have been crying since I left the doctor yesterday.

I'm sorry to hear that, Kellie. The same thing happened to me last week and I don't blame you one bit fo being so upset. I was devastated when it happened to me. My RE thinks my cervix is OK because he was able to get through it for sonohystogram previous (saline in catheter), but my RE doesn't do HSG and this was a radiologist who failed. My cervix points to the left and my uterus is tilted.
I am going to schedule a hysteroscopy with my RE for CD5-10 on my next cycle. My RE said he would get an anesthesiologist to knock me out and then they would put a camera up there but also used fluid so they can check if my tubes are open. I hope that does the trick and they don't see any problems. Good luck with your procedure. I hope it's not as bad as you fear. But I just want to scream, "SERIOUSLY? Why does it have to be like this!!!"

Hugs! I am so so sorry To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. I too had a very painful experience when my HSG was done. I didn't have this site or friends who had been there before so I was caught totally surprised and had not taken anything for it.
I can understand being scared. Try to relax as much as you can and not think about it. The Vallum will take most of your cares away the day of!
The HSG was the absolute hardest part of the entire IF treatment process. IUI was a breeze, I waited a whole YEAR after my HSG because I was so afraid and overwhelmed by it. Take someone you trust with you for support, and if you are a spiritual person I highly suggest some repetitive prayer.
I will be thinking of you, and hoping for a smooth, painless procedure tomorrow.

Ok so I made it through the first part. I really hope none of you ever have to go through that (doctor said dialation can be more painful than labor) They did not put me on anything before like they said they would. This doctor was really good though and he has made special arrangements so that he can do the hsg for me this afternoon and he gave me vicodin and vallume to take before I go in later. He said he did not see anything wrong with my cervix. He also said after what I just went through the hsg will be easy and should not hurt too much. I am still cramping a little from earlier and a bit uncomfortable. I am hoping for the best this afternoon.
