Unhappy hCG INCREASE BUT NO PREGNANCY!?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me? I had a miscarriage on 4th May. Have felt discomfort low down and light bleeding ever since. My doctor redid my bloods on 19th May and my hCG levels have risen again after initially
falling?! He is confused and so am I?! His only though last week was maybe an ovarian cyst secreting the hormone?! Anyone else had this experience? Help!! I only go back later this week.

Thanks, Deb x x x

I'm sorry for your loss....I had that happen with one of my losses....My hcg went from 120 down to 35, then back up to 70. Did they do an ultrasound to make sure there was no tissue left? Also, I would be concerned about it being ectopic.

((hug))

Or, are they sure it wasn't a twin pregnancy and you only lost one? There's a lot of reasons it could be happening, but they'll have to do an ultrasound to look and see what's really going on before deciding on a next course of action.

Unhappy

Thanks ladies for your advice. I have had an pelvic ultrasound and an internal ultrasound and everything appears clear. I had more bloods taken today and my doctor has just phoned saying that he has spoken to the gynaecologist and he has been advised to take my bloods again on Thursday morning (1 week since the last bloods showed and increased level of hCG) and see what they say. I am hoping they have gone down and I will get back to 'me' soon. I still have discomfort and have just been at the toilet and from having had next to no discharge/blood this morning I now have fresh blood again (even though very little). Kristina, what did it mean for you when your hCG levels went up again? I am just sooooooooooo fed up of feeling like this, I just want to get back to normal and enjoy married life (got married on 8th April "CONGRATULATIONS KAYIENA!!).

Thanks again and I will keep you posted on any developments!

Question

Well I have been back at doctor today (getting MORE bloods taken) and my bloods from Tuesday are sitting at the same level as last Wednesdays (96). My doctor is going to speak to gynae tomorrow and advise me of next course of action.

Still bleeding and confused?!

Sorry for going on and on and on..........

It may be possible that you may need to have a D&C to remove any leftover tissue, which is usually not seen through u/s. I am sorry for your loss.

When I went through my losses I found a great deal of help and answers over on the loss forum. There are some very knowledgable ladies over there that may be able to offer you more insight from their experiences.

Best Wishes.

Yah, wait and see what the repeat labs say, but you may very well just have retained tissue that will have to be removed via D and C. The loss forum is a very good recommendation, they have all been there and can give you better answers.

I just had a similar problem. I didn't know about pcos and I thought I was pregnant because of the symptoms I was having (extreme fatigue, nausea, and dizziness as well as minor abdominal pressure). I took an ept on monday that came out positive and on wednesday was informed with 4 tests (one being a blood test) that I was definitely not pregnant. (I pursued the matter and have just been diagnosed with pcos). I called the ept company and they informed me that the false positive sometimes happens because of cysts. I dont' know if this information will help you any but I can understand where you are coming from with all the confusion. We all would just love a straight answer one way or the other!!!!

Cysts do not produce hcg, the hormone pregnancy tests are testing for. They just don't. A small, very rare type of tumor can produce them however. Otherwise, unless you got a trigger shot of hcg, you are, or recently were, pg.

wait wait wait... ru talking to me? explain this... monday positive on clear blue easy digital... wednesday 2 negative urine tests, negative blood test, and negative clear blue easy digital test... thursday called clear blue easy about "false positive" and they said cysts could sometimes give a false positibe. thursday evening admitted to ER, diagnosed with PCOS- no pregnancy... you tell me, what does that mean?

down, sounds to me like an early m/c. I recently had the same thing happen and my OB's nurse said that protein can sometimes cause a false HPT BFP. Um, not sure that I by that but I do believe I probably had some sort of early m/c. Sounds like that could be what happened to you. I too have never known PCOS cysts to produce HCG.

Debbie, have you found anything more out?

Well Debbie also had HCG levels tested, which proves it was a pregnancy, nothing caused by cysts.

Down-spiral, when they did your blood test did they do a qualitative or a quantitative. If it was onlly qualitative you need to demand a quantitative, which will tell you how much hcg is in your system, if any. A qualitative will be negative with any hcg below whatever the lab decides is a neg result, usualy anything <5. So if you did have a very early m/c, by the time you had the blood work, your hcg may have been below 5 which they would consider negative.
That being said, hpt's are never 100%, you could have very well had a faulty test. Did you test at home again since then?
As for a cyst causing a false positive, it just will not happen. A cyst will cause a false surge on an opk, but that's about it.

I guess I had a quantitative. Everything has been negative including the home one I did. Here is the weird thing. I have having periods kinda regularly (at least they didn't disappeare for months on end). So I had a pretty normal period the last week of april. Then a week later I had another one. But it was crazy heavy and lasted three days with a fourth day of spotting. On the 3rd of may I started getting nausea, on the sixth I got the weird period. I had a ton of pregnancy like symptoms and I thought for sure I had to be pg. But the doc said no, I am not pg and I never was. They say all they symptoms I had/have must somehow relate to PCOS. If I hadn't fought the pg issue then I wouldn't have even found out about PCOS.

I was in the er yesterday and they found cysts. They said I couldn't be pg if I had cysts. But the doc also said getting pg would cure PCOS, and all the docs are convinced that pcos is a new development for me (I think I've always had it and they just didn't diagnose it) and they all seem to think that overnight it will just go away and I will never see it again. I'm pretty upset. I don't know which way is up or down and I don't know what info is correct. Grrr!!!
