I've been on BCP for almost five years and I don't think my hair has really grown back in but I think it stopped falling out so badly. It seems to have stabilizied. I'm still very very self-conscious by what I consider my bald spot. I don't know if people are kind or what, but everyone tells me that don't see what I'm talking about. My hairdresser can tell it's thin though. I hate it. Of all the symptoms I have I think the alopecia is the worst. I don't like any of the other symptoms either but I feel like I have more control over them. The scalp hair loss is just there for the world to see and I often want to cry too!
I am also using Nioxin products - the cleanser (shampoo), scalp therapy, scalp treatment, and follicle booster. And while sometimes I feel like it's not really working and I'm still losing lots of hair, if I stop using it, then I lose tons more hair so I see that it is helping at least somewhat. Nioxin is expensive but worth it to me. A friend of mine says there is a cheaper brand similar to that at Sally Beauty Supply. I've never tried it.
I am also using a generic of Rogaine - minoxidil - at the suggestion of my dermatologist. I've been using for over 5 months and I honestly do not see any new growth. I figure I'll give it to my next visit with her in 6 months and see what she says. My RE advised that I keep using the minoxidil when I saw him last.
I am also on spironolactone for a few months now and I THINK that might be working.
So I don't think BCPs alone will help your hair loss but maybe with a combination of other treatments.
Good luck!
