I'm new here and have so many issues and questions.
My current dilemma is:
I've come down with a head cold/sinus problem. I'm very congested, achy, and generally feel like doodoo. I bought some Sudafed and some Tylenol cold medicine today. I've taken two of the Sudafed so far (not really helping). I noticed on the back of the box it said not to take either medication if you're diabetic w/o first consulting your doctor.
My doctor is difficult to get a hold of. I took the Sudafed anyway. I noticed my blood sugar was high before dinner (166).
Does anyone know why it says not to take these medicines if you're diabetic? Is it because the meds will elevate your blood sugar, or something else?
If I really shouldn't be taking this stuff, can anyone recommend something else that would treat a cold and is safe for diabetics?
I am no expert, but I think it is because some meds can effect blood sugar levels - there are sugar free alternatives usually in the section with the other diabetic products. HTH! My DH was dx type 1 this year and he had to be careful about that too.

I've also heard those meds can cause elevated blood sugar. I used to take tylenol cold and flu but if you can find "cold eeze" they work so much better. They only seem to have them at walgreens, they come in a bag and they're like cough drops, you suck on one every 2 or 3 hours. And then you can take some tylenol with it if you've got a fever/head ache. I know they're ok for diabetics cause my finace's diabetic and was told to take them to help get rid of a cold asap.

Almost every medicine says to ask your doc about it if you're diabetic. According to my pharmacist this is mainly because of any possible effects it could have with your numbers. But being sick all by itself will raise your blood glucose numbers for most people! (Lowers mine...but I'm weird!) I don't pay extra for the diabetic meds, but my Type 1 cousin is supposed to.
try nyquil i just recently got over a head cold last weekend and i took nyquil it tasted really bad but it helped alot im not sure if its safe 4 diabetics i have pre diabetes but i dont check my blood sugar so im not sure if it made it rise

Nearly every medicine in my house says to consult your doc if you're diabetic, and half of them say it for thyroid, too. I consulted my doc once and have never bothered since. If you're a diabetic it's smart to keep a close eye on your blood glucose, closer than normal, when you're sick and especially when taking meds.
