I have no insurance (no job) and plan on making an appointment with the health department, mostly for birth control. This is my first appointment for this sort of thing and wondered what happens on the first visit? What kind of tests do they do? Are all the tests required, usually?
For anyone who went to the health department, I know they work on a sliding scale but how expensive is the scale when it comes to the exam and birth control costs?
I absolutely dread going, but I dread ever getting pregnant more!
I dont know about the Health Department but my friend went to Planned Parenthood with no insurance and they charged her $35.00 for examination and like 6 packets of birth control.
I don't know what they charge. For some reason our health department quit giving exams and birth control. Its sad because there is so many people in this town who don't have insurance and can't afford to go to the doc.

I also have no insurance and I'm a college kid so no job... However, just make sure you pretty much request your BC as follows: the most inexpensive yet EFFECTIVE generic pill they have. Then go to kmart or walmart to have it filled, generics are especially cheap through these pharmacies. Maybe Walgreens too idk because I've never been to one. I have to go to the doc for something else next week and will also be requesting some BC. Hope this helps!
----Also:--- RJH324, how on earth did your friend only get charged like $35? I tried to go to planned parenthood in September while I was up at my college because I don't have health insurance, and they threatened to have me pay like a $300 deductible type thing even though I flat out said I'm a college kid and I have no income. They also ask for like bank statements and like two forms of ID and stuff, when I tried to go it was harder than trying to apply for a driver's license with the DMV. grrrr
My health department charges on a slant based on income. It usually runs about $20 and that covers the exam and all medication.

I went to my health department and filled out an application to go on Medicaid Family Planning. I had the exam and received 9 months of birth control for nothing! A few weeks after, I received my Medicaid card in the mail. You have to have your birth certificate with you when you fill it out. That was my experience, hope that helps.
Well I go to a clinic and they charge me $25 per visit I don't have any insurance! ( i wish i did) and they pretty much do everything, they ussually give me pres. for rx (generic) and I get it filled (its ussually like $4). this is like a health dept. but maybe less people, you should ck and see if there is something like this close by you. I use to go to the health dept in my city, but they were not as knowledgable as I wished. but you can get birth control and a pap for about $20 or what ever you can pay that time and they will bill you later
