Default Health Insurance ?

I was just wondering how long after you have the baby does it need to be put on your health insurance? I assume it it would be sooner than later, but with my insurance say I would sign up on the 2nd of the month it would not kick in until the 1st of the following month. Would my child still be covered under my insurance if it need to go back with in that time period? Or should this be something i have set up before i go into labor?

Your baby should be covered immediatley. You do need to notify the insurance company of the birth. Technically, you have 30 or 60 days to make changes on your insurance due to life events, i.e. marriage, birth, death, divorce.

with my insurance you have 30 days to get the baby signed up...until then, they are just included on your policy....

Your baby will be covered as long as you contact them during their specified time frame. If you have the handbook of benefits for your policy it'll tell you in there how long you have. Or you can always just call the 800 number on your insurance card and ask a rep. Most policies that I've seen give just 30 days, and you will need to make sure you have a SS # for the baby before attempting to add them to the policy. (Most hospitals have you fill out the SS application with the birth certificate and what-not.)

just thought i would add that i didn't need a SSN for my kids...after all, i have 30 days to get them on the policy and my state takes 4-6 weeks to get you the SSN...every state is different though.

Similar to other responses, my employer told me we have 30 days from our boy's birth to get him on DH insurance (we work for the same school district). Until then, the baby is covered on our plan.
