Default Health Insurance

My husband's company is raising our premiums for health insurance soon to $135 per WEEK for our family. It makes me want to throw up. How are we supposed to afford this?! Does anyone know of any way to get cheaper health insurance somewhere else?! This makes me crazy!

JoEllen - I totally understand. It's ridiculous the amounts they can charge - you'd think it'd be illegal.

My sister has leukemia and is on disability. As such, she receives about $1000 from social security, but the Cobra she's on has now raised her rates to $810/month. Add to that the copays on all her medications and doctor visits, and she's wiped out. How can anyone, let alone someone with a serious illness, live while paying those kind of premiums. When she speaks to her insurance company, they say they're following federal guidelines about how much to raise rates. Then the individual looks at her premium and essentially says, "Wow. You're hosed."

And because she owns a home, all those patient advocates or patient assistance programs won't help her. You have to be completely destitute to receive any kind of assistance. It's so frustrating because she's been a responsible adult, thought she was doing the right thing to be protected, paid her taxes, disability, insurance, etc, and then when we need it the most, they let us down. Oh, and she's not eligible for the high-risk state insurance pool because someone (Cobra) is offering to insure her.

Sorry to hijack your thread. This just makes me so angry, and I don't think enough people know what's going on. I wish I had an answer for you...

JoEllen--

The rates for insurance in the Northeast are out of this world. When we still lived in NJ the rates for the insurance through my husband's work was over $400. It is half of that for us here. I wish I could tell you going with private insurance is cheaper, but we did that for a little bit and it wasn't. (and that was here in GA)

Sorry I couldn't be of much help.

Ah well, thanks girls for listening. I agree this system is totally screwed up. It's tempting to go without insurance and just save the $7000 we pay a year in premiums and use that to pay out of pocket for doctor's visits. But I guess you never know when you might need to go into the hospital. Besides, here in Mass it's the law now that every resident must have heath insurance or you get charged penalties. I know one thing they do is they won't let you take certain deductions on your income tax return.

It's just wrong.

Keleigh, sorry about your sister. It's always the good people who do things the right way who get screwed isn't it?

We pay over 680 dollars a month for Blue Cross through DH's work. But we found a place called Insurance Giant, that we will be switching over to in December. We have to wait because that is when the current contract expires. GRRR!! Anyway, with Insurance Giant we will pay about 350 a month, for Blue Cross and MORE coverage!!!!!

Check them out... they are going to save us a ton!

Exactly..can't afford it, can't not afford it.

Does anyone know if there is a such a thing as health insurance just for hospital stays? We'd be willing to pay low premiums for hospital-only insurance and just pay out of pocket for regular doctor visits.

There is such a thing as catastrophic or major medical insurance.

http://health.nase.org/Health101/Basics.asp

If you’re self-employed, or you work for a micro-business owner that doesn’t offer health insurance, you may be a candidate for a catastrophic health plan. These plans are characterized by high deductibles (anywhere from $500 to $15,000) and low monthly premiums. While they typically cover hospital stays, surgery, intensive care, diagnostic X-rays, and lab tests, they generally do not pay for routine doctor visits, prescription drugs, mental health treatment, or pregnancy. They also have lifetime “caps” between $1 million and $3 million. If you reach that cap, your policy is voided and you are on the hook for any additional expenses. While these plans are not for the risk-adverse, they are an alternative to going uninsured. The catch is that if you want to purchase catastrophic coverage, you must be healthy. Pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, emphysema, or heart disease (along with many others) will prevent you from buying a plan.

We pay $1000 a month for family insurance with Tufts. My Dh is self employed.

Massachusetts just enacted a law thet all ma residents must ahve insurance. Have you checked any of the government website sto see if there is a lower cost ins alternative for you.

Yeah, I've looked into it somewhat but my dh makes too much money (ha! yeah right) to qualify for most things I've seen AND the fact that he has health insurance "available" at work disqualifies us. Since his work offers it, we can't get the cheaper plans.. they are really for people who's employers don't offer it. I called last week. It's annoying.

JosieFB, thanks for the info. I'll have to check that out...

I just wish there would be a major change to this system... but no one wants to make a change. Politics.. ugh! Healthcare should NOT be a "profitable" industry!!!!!

I couldn't image paying what you ladies pay. My husband pays $120/month for both of us. I thought that was a lot. Now I am very thankful! Good luck!

I feel your pain. If I get a policy here I was quote $521 per month FOR JUST ME!!!! If I go on the state plan for high risk (since lucky me, I have pre-existing conditions, i.e., PCOS) It will be 600+ per month for JUST ME! I have chosen just to not have insurance. That is too damn much to pay for one person. It's a joke.

oh, and I was reading in Forbes (I think it was) that United Healthcare is the third most profitable company (or something like that.) Yeah, that's f*%#*^d up!

Man, we used to complain about my husband's old insurance which was about $120 per 2 weeks for both of us. Now with his new job (even though we are switching over to a new health insurance company that is WAY better and covers more) it's going to be about $700 per WEEK for both of us and the baby!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that is outrageous.

That's $2800 a month?!!?? How can that be? How can you possibly afford that? For that, they ought to pick you up in a limo to take you to the doctor!
