Default Health Insurance!

I wasn't sure where else to post this question.

Do any of you that are self-employed know where to find good health insurance plans?

Any suggestions would be helpful! I'm currently utilizing COBRA (which will eventually expire) after being bumped from my Mom's insurance because I turned 25.

Thanks!!

Check whether your state offers insurance for self-employed and small businesses. Just a little surfing, and I turned up http://www.ins.state.ny.us/website2/hny/english/hny.htm

Check into professional organizations related to your occupation. There may be something you can join that offers group insurance.

In Georgia we have the following large companies to purchase individual and family insurance from. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, United Healthcare, Kaiser, Coventry. There may be more but these are the ones heavily advertised. I myself have been self employed for many years and we purchase our own health insurance. In the past I did it myself, via internet or by calling the company directly, but last year I used an independant insurance agent and have been very pleased with the service. He was able to look at our pre-exsistings and try to get us with a company who didn't have strict underwriting guidelines for these conditions. I will continue to use him, as each year he is up to date on what is available, best plans for us, etc. It costs no more to use an agent than to do it online via an insurance web site because the insurance companies build these fees into the premiums.
Good luck and hope this helps you.

Thanks for the suggestions! I came across that HealthyNY too and was excited until I saw that in order to be eligible you have to be uninsured. I don't understand that, but I can't risk having any gaps in my insurance because of pre-existing conditions.
I'm waiting to hear back from BlueCross...maybe they'll have something good. We'll see!

I also came across the Freelancers Union but they don't have any specialists in my area.
