Default Health Insurance-no coverage for PCOS

So, Goldenrule took my payment and sent me the policy. But they put a rider on it stating that they will not cover anything related to or stemming from PCOS, including hirutism, and also any medications, treatments, or surgeries aimed at trying to conceive.

What the heck? I am afraid that this policy will use PCOS as an excuse to deny everything I have, since PCOS has so many broad symptoms that overlap with other conditions.

Any one else ran it this? What did you do?

Fortunately, many 'pcos' symptoms are really symptoms of 'other' disorders, and those 'other' disorders are what your doctors should note when treating you.

Unless you're actively seeking fertility treatments, right now, this decision shouldn't have a huge impact on your out-of-pocket costs of treatments. There are no fda approved treatments for PCOS, so you're not missing out there.

At this point, just focus on getting in the best health you can, and you might not need additional assitance in the fertility area.

I agree with Kat

Just because you go to your Doc for treatment for "unrelated symptoms" doesn't mean anyone has to scream "She's got PCOS by the way!" from the rooftops. Your insurance company's computer doesn't know the difference.

There are many of us too who have conceived more than once without fertility treatments and until you know for sure that you'll need them...

Feel better

Paula

I guess I am not too worried about the conception part. The only thing that worries me would be surgery for cyst removal, or if I had yet another miscarriage, that they would not cover the d&c, which I had with the last one, because they might try and say that pcos caused the miscarriage.

I am paying them 226 a month, and that includes the pregnancy provision, so I hope that they cant do that. Anyone think there is a chance they could? I would think not, since technically, no one anywhere has a real reason for why a miscarriage happens.

Based on what you posted earlier, they are seeking to avoid paying for fertility treatments, and cosmetic issues related to hirsutism.

A D&C is not a fertility treatment.

Cyst removal to increase fertility might be a problem.

Cyst removal to reduce infection, pain, etc, will probably be covered.

If you're worried, just always double check what your doctor writes down. The doctor wants to get paid, too...

As long as the insurance company is focused on fertility (and you're not)...let them focus on fertility...

Until you're concerned about fertility....just be sure you're seeing your doctor for whatever your specific symptom is...don't make everything about PCOS.

And to be on the safe side, make a point to get in the best health possible (ie eat right, exercise, etc...).

Some women have gotten so healthy that they their labs don't read 'pcos' any longer, and you might get it taken off of your records.
