I may be asking the impossible, but I'm wondering if there are any healthy protein bars out there that don't contain soy protein (have thyroid issues) or hydrogenated oils, and are easy on the sugar content? I looked at Luna and Balance brand bars last night and I was not too impressed. I'm looking for something with a fairly simple ingredient list, not a lot of junk in it that you can't even pronounce. I'm going to check out the selection at the healthfood store tomorrow, but if I remember correctly, they feature Luna bars.
I would really appreciate any suggestions!

I think you're looking for the impossible. I've been looking for some myself. Have you had any luck? I was at a few stores today and when I asked one of the ladies working at one of them, she said I was the 3rd person this week to ask her about no soy bars. And all of us had thyroid problems who had asked. It's amazing how many things are made with soy. I never realized it was so abundant - and how much of it I had been eating.
Good luck; hope you find something. And it tastes good. lol (some of these things are nasty!)

I think you're right, Diane, I haven't had any luck. Oh well, let's keep each other posted if we find anything! I guess I'll stick with my almonds and peanut butter. I was just hoping for something I could grab on the run more easily (don't eat beef jerkey, string cheese), and one does get tired of nuts! Thanks for sharing.

Ladies,
Will one of you please refresh my memory about the soy vs. thyroid relationship? Thanks.
I would suggest baking some granola bars of your own, focusing on the brans and nuts and coconut, sweetening with Splenda and/or fructose or date sugar, and adding a bunch of egg white powder or whey protien powder. They would be freezable. Speaking of that, it would also be great to add the same protein ingredients to homemade pudding pops as a frozen treat.
Good luck!
Sheri

Sheri - good idea about making them. I've been looking around for an interesting recipe. And something that I can incorporate with weight watchers. I so hate trying to figure out points from the ingredients.
As for soy and thyroid - I'm probably not going to explain this properly, but I'll try. Soy is a phytoestrogen. And estrogen either binds to thyroid hormone or vice-versa. Whatever the case, too much estrogen in your body doesn't have a good effect on your thyroid, it ends up not producing enough hormone and you end up hypo- (and it causes goiter too). Something like that. I think. lol All I know is that soy isn't good for hypothyroidism. Neither are brussels sprouts, rutabaga, turnips, kohlrabi, radishes, cauliflower, African cassava, millet, babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit popular in Brazil and Africa) cabbage, and kale. http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa100500a.htm
It's funny - I've never been dx with hypo- before. I should have been. My anti-bodies should have been tested - I have an enlarged thyroid and I have for years but no one checked anything except my TSH and that was always "within range". Last Sept. (around then), I had read on this board about soy isoflavones and it's clomid-like quality. Well, I decided to give it a go - and after using it for 5 days each month for 2 months (or it could have been 3, I don't remember; I just know I didn't think it was good for me and I stopped it), my TSH was over 7 at the end of November. So, I don't know if it was a good thing to have done so that I was finally dx or not. Or whether I did further damage.
Jessica - I did find some sort of bars online. I don't know if these are what you're looking for or if you'd even want to order them online. The only thing is, in order to find the soy-free bars, you end up with them being all other kinds of "free" - which, I guess, in the long run isn't bad. Some of them ARE kind of high in the carb/sugar department; however, it's from natural sugars (apple/pear/grape juice) as opposed to refined sugar. Check them out; you know what you're looking for, ingredients, the ratio of protein/carb and what your limit is, etc. Some are out of stock, but you can check back here and there. The first one, Aunt Candice, is found in some stores; there's a link at the top of the site to find retailers: http://store.auntcandicefoods.com/cg...135+1073973384
Hope one of these will work for you. I have too much info in my head right now to decide. Wow, let me tell you - there are a LOT of protein bars available. I'm on information overload. LOL
