Default Heartburn

I was just wondering if anyone else gets really bad heartburn and if they do, can they suggest something to maybe help with it?

I'm going to see the doctor about the bad heartburn I've been getting but I have to wait 2 weeks before my appointment. I'm not sure if the heartburn is caused because of pcos. I've tried everything that's worked in the past...drinking milk, take some heartburn pills but nothing seems to be working and I know it's not because of something I've eaten because I've not eaten much today and what I have eaten is the same as I ate yesterday and yesterday I was fine. Can anyone help?

Heartburn/reflux/gerd is often a symptom of a food allergy. Have you tried eliminating dairy, for example?

Right now I take protonics (doctor's script) at night and prilosec in the morning. I have nasty reflux.

I get bad heartburn with ruptured cysts. It sounds strange, but I always have Maalox & Tumms around now because of it. If your pain is persistent & doesn't subside after weeks, then its something else your system is reacting to. It's terrible I know

I've tried eliminating dairy on the suggestion of a nurse friend of my mums. I still got it. It doesnt happen all the time but when it does, nothing seems to help. I'll give the peppermint tea a try and I'll try tumms too. I never thought to try those lol

Thanks everyone I'll let you know what the outcome is

Another thought, foods high in fat or refined carbohydrate content tend to give me heartburn. So I TRULY tend to avoid them. I also had heartburn more regularly leading up to my gallbladder attack --ended up with an emergency operation-- & during pregnancy. And, if I lie down or otherwise recline too soon after eating, especially if the food contained too much fat, I get heartburn.

Ideally, finding your triggers for heartburn in order to prevent an occurence is paramount. If that fails, then try any one of the suggestions listed above.

I have bad reflux too. I've been on Prevacid before, and am now on Nexium. I've had GERD since 2000, when i was only 18.

I've read that mints are bad for heartburn, so try the peppermint tea with caution. We all have different triggers but there are some that most people suffer from.

I know for me, chocolate is a big one. Ice cream and salad dressing make me flare up too, as does carbonated sodas like Diet Coke. The last few times I had a few pieces of garlic bread they bothered me too, it was probably the fat in the butter. Orange juice is acidic and it can bother me too, although the light kind is better than the regular kind. And forget about grapefruits or grapefruit juice: it's too acidic for me. And do your best not to overeat: I get bad heartburn if I get too full. Stop before you are satisfied.

I've read not to eat any closer than three hours before bed. Sometimes if I take a nap I get bad heartburn because I'm laying down close after eating. Definitely see your doctor about it because it's good to be on medications that heal any erosions if you have any. I had an endoscopy last year to make sure everything looked okay. It did, but even when I avoid my triggers and eat sensibly I still have symptoms almost every day. It's not nearly as bad as it once was, but it's still very frustrating.

I hope you find some relief.

I've noticed it sometimes comes on when I drink Coke Zero but not all the time. It's really weird. I've had no heartburn today and I've drank some Coke Zero. It just comes and goes when it feels like it

Me too. Some days I'm very good and I still have symptoms, while other times I eat several things that bother me and I feel relatively good. Maybe stress has something to do with it?

I've been getting some bouts of heartburn lately. In Feb. my chest was burning for 3 days straight. I had that feeling when you breath in cold air when running and your chest burns. I went to the Dr. She thought I had acid reflux or asthma. She prescribed Protonix for the acid reflux and it does help when I take it. I try natural remedies first though . . . I was also diagnosed with IBS last Dec. PCOS and IBS, and possibly acid reflux . . . it's so hard to say what the cause could be?

I haven't tried it yet,but a friend of mine is taking apple cider vinegar, and she says that it has eliminated her heartburn like nothing she has ever taken.

I tried drinking some peppermint tea yesterday when I had heartburn and it worked! I was shocked. Although, my heartburn was pretty mild. Not bad like other times. I'll just have to wait and see if it works then too

It's funny how some trigger foods affect people so differently. If I so much as look at something peppermint I get heartburn, but I'm ok with sodas and tomato which are usually bad trigger foods.

Before I started taking Nexium, my wonder drug, drinking aloe helped me a lot. It was soothing on my throat, which was often left raw from the acid, and it seemed to cut down on the acid attacks.

It's also really important to figure out what your trigger foods actually are. They may not be the typical ones, and if you're like me, you may be able to eat certain foods, just not in combination or on the same day. Some of them will even give me reflux when I'm on the Nexium. Keeping a food and symptom diary can be a bit of a pain, but it's completely worth it to get everything under control.

I also second the vote that it could be an allergy. I thought for years that bananas gave me heartburn -- turns out I'm just allergic to them!
