Default Heavy periods after diagnosis

Hey all,
I haven't been "officially" diagnosed with PCOS, but my gyno has mentioned it as a possibility and I'm pretty sure I have it. My periods were irregular from my late teens on --often didn't have any at all. I was just diagnosed last month with T2 diabetes and immediately switched to a lower-carb WOE and began taking 500 mg Glucophage. My blood sugars are normal now (usually 90s and have only been above 120 3 times in the whole month).
Anyway, January 1, I got a period (the first one in several months) and it has been incredibly heavy. Is my body just readjusting to normal hormone levels and shedding all the months of unshed lining finally? Should I be concerned and is there anyway to lessen the flow a little?
Thanks so much,
Tara
