Smile Hello

Just a quicky message to say hello to the UK Cysters. I have "posted" on the "Trying to Conceive" site about a year ago, just found out then I had PCOS through Doctors at Assisted Conception Unit.

Anyhow, last year I was going through a rough time of it, with major hyperstimulation - very sick and in hospital - doctors saying I wasn't pregnant as I had low HcG levels after IVF treatment blah blah, long story. However, I just had a little girl on 22/12/02, the best Christmas pressie ever!

Just a mention to Deeds - I remember you were going through a pretty bad time lat year also and have noticed you had a little girl in January! Many congratulations, I am sure you are enjoying every minute (well almost!).

LOL - Scotty xx

Default Hi Scotty

Congratulations on your success, after the hyperstimulation. I under went IVF in May 2001 and I hyperstimulated with 40 eggs in total. 24 in my left ovary and 16 in my right. I also was hospitilised for the severe pain I had due to it and it took me ages to recover. I'm glad that all worked out well for you in the end.
Also can you say what Unit you were treated at I was Ninewells, Dundee and I have since found out that alot of woman have suffered the same there.

Best of wishes to you and your baby!!

Default Hi There Stina

Hi there Stina. God your hyperstimulation sounded really bad. I'm sorry that the IVF attempt didn't work out and you h/stimulated before they could get eggs. In my case, I suppose I was lucky (apart from getting pregnant, I mean) I h/stimulated once the embryo attached and this was becuase of the HcG production.

In answer to your question, I was treated at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (funded by NHS, as first attempt) They, were really good and the nursing staff are excellent. If we were ever able to afford to pay for an attempt (and I would do it again, even after the h/stimulation!) I would definitely consider going back. The only thing, I had to complain about was that when I h/stimulated, my pregnancy test came back +pos, but the HcG levels were very low (they look for an HcG level of around about 50 on the first preg test) Mines was 11 and they told me that things were not looking good. Anyhow, (I am trying to cut a long storey short here!) they every week when I did not miscarry they kept telling me I was having a biochemical pregnancy (where possibly just the sack, a piece of tissue and some hormones existed was causing my +pos preg test and that I would miscarry). Well that went on for five weeks until the consultant scanned me and they saw a heartbeat) I still can't believe it. It was only because of this site as well that I argued with them that I was pregnant (another american lady messaged me to say that she had had an HcG of 11 and ended up with healthy twins!). I just wanted to tell you because, well I don't know for sure, but I think it is maybe related to PCOS, there seems to be messages popping up from time to time with low HcG level questions. So when you get pregnant if this happens to you stick to your guns until you really know for sure - the Doctors don't always know best, even though they think they do! (They told me they were so sure becuase it had never happened before, someone with such low HcG having a baby - well duh, just because it never happened before doesn't mean it can't!!).

As for Ninewells (I have heard various reports on them and I am not entirely sure they are the best, they certainly don't seem as good as Edinburgh, but I have no personal experience of their ACU. I am partly going on the hospital as a whole (I am a Student Nurse) and they seem to have a bit of a reptuation or did at one time. However, its probably different with the ACU as they are a private unit and the technology is the same or should be as Edinburgh. At Edinburgh I was very closely monitored and at one point was going in for blood tests every day to monitor for high oestrogen levels.

Were you NHS funded? I thought you would have been sent to Edinburgh if you live in Livingston, then again, its I suppose it is who the attending hospital have a contract with. At the time (last March/April) I was living in Edinburgh (now in Galashiels, which is under Ninewells) I glad I didn't have all that travelling to do, it would have put alot of extra pressure on us.

Anyway, I will stop blurbing on and on. The very best of luck to you and let me know when you get pregnant! If there is anything else you would like to ask/know, dont hesitate.

Scotty
