Hello! My name is Emily, I am 24 years old. Married in May of last year. I was diagnosed today with PCOS. Looks like I am going to start taking Provera for 10 days, every 6-8 weeks. I don't know much about this, so any information would be helpful, I am looking for books in particular. I am also a nurse, however I never learned much about PCOS in school, so like any nurse I will research it to death!

I've had PCOS for a while now. I take Provera now 10 pills one a day for 10 days just to make my period come on. I did not have any side effects from taking the Provera. If I don't take the pills I don't get my period. As far as getting information on PCOS you've come to the right place. I'm new to the site and I've been reading the different post and it's suprising to see that other women have the same issues and questions that you have. Everyone is friendly and helpful just ask if you don't know.

Welcome!
Isn't it funny how we take care of all our patients, but leave ourselves last?? Anyhow.. according to my 2004 drug handbook, provera suppresses ovulation. When you quit, it causes withdrawal bleeding.. that is why you have your period. I'm not sure (DX) but I know that Dr.s can R/O certain DX's based on how you respond to provera. In my case, I had gained 30# in 2 months of using that... so I quit on my own.. I had my problem YEARS ago... then they called it Stein-Leventhal. They no longer use that. It's in your Tabers.. Back then, they thought it was strictly and ovarian problem, so remove the ovaries, and presto, no more problems.. X in my case,no presto>>> still having problems, even after having a Vag hyst with BSO over 12 years ago!! As far as research... I too, research as much as I can... And, as you know... school gets you through the basics needed... the real learning is on the floors.. No real specialty details are taught in school.
My favorite research on this site, is on the "research4PCOS" forum.. it's a sticky at the top of the forum titled 'required reading' . I wish we had a medical font, but I guess then the rest couldn't understand. Happy research!! and good luck on your PCOS journey. see you on the boards!
