well i thought i would share my story with everyone. I have recently been diagnosed with pcos. yuck. atleast i know whats wrong with me. i went to the doc because i only had about 1 or 2 periods a year. im small 4'11 and weigh 92 pounds, but luckly i found a obgyn that knows her stuff. i feel very lucky after reading about everyone else. anyway she gave me prova to induce a period and done some blood work. she said my hormones are out of whack. lol whack. ive never heard a doctor say whack. i dont have excess hair or anything yet..which really is bothering me. well she put me on met 1500 mg. im starting at 500mg a week,1000 a week, then there on 1500mg. me and my husband are wanting a baby so she wants me to try this for 3 months before she puts me on clomid. she said there is an increased risk for twins with clomid and other serious risk factors? just wondering do you take met forever or just while trying to get pregnant. she gave me 5 refills of 90 pills. so i assume ill take it for a long time. she also done more (i hate needles!!!!) blood work. to see if my body would reject things like chicken pox,measles,etc..is it because i want to get pregnant? anyway im glad i found this place.
I am sure you will find this place a great deal of help and best of luck with the Metformin. Some people take Metformin all the time if it works, others I hear take it till they are about 20 weeks pregnant!

Good luck with the Met Samantha! I'm hoping to start on it next week, praying it will sort my cycles out so I have a chance at conceiving this year, fingers crossed!

Samantha, Met definitely boosts the effectiveness of Clomid. And, while Clomid does increase the incidence of twins, it's not a dramatic increase...you'd still be more likely to have a singleton.
I'm a big believer in staying on Met throughout a pregnancy, for the following reasons:
1)It helps reduce the chance of a M/C in the first trimester, which we're at increased risk for. For this reason, most doctors will tell their PCOS patients to stay on Met through 12 weeks, when the risk lowers.
2)Met helps reduce the risk of gestational diabetes and preterm labor, which we're also at increased risk for in the third trimester.
3)While somebody mentioned to me that they found a study showing that Met was dangerous to babies, I haven't been able to find that study - every study I've seen has shown that there is NO effect on babies whose mothers stayed on Met.
4)Met helps your body produce breastmilk, which is another problem some cysters have.
5)I actually have NORMAL pregnancy symptoms with this pregnancy, which I didn't have last time, when I wasn't on Met.
Good luck on TTC! When you're successful, have your doc check your progesterone around 5-6 weeks, okay?
