Hi. My name is Stacey, I am 22 years old. I was just diagnosed yesterday with PCOS. During my ultrasound, I could see my ovaries, covered with little black cists. It was horrifying for me. My doctor told me all of the factors, and as I have been researching, everything he said seems to be accurate. My boyfriend and I want to have a baby, but the doctor told me that since I am not releasing any eggs, it will not be a possibility. He put me on birth control to give me a normal cycle again. See, I don't get my period except every 4 months. Most recently, I haven't had it since last October. He said I am at risk for cancer, and infertility. I told my boyfriend everything I know so far, and he said he will love me and stay by my side throughout everything... but I still feel so alone. I am devistated with my results, and I regret not going in for a PAP sooner. I have to go back in 3 weeks, and I had a bunch of bloodwork done yesterday.
I am so scared! Will I be able to have children?? That is my biggest fear... that I won't.
Hi stacey!! My name is Melanie and I am new to soulcysters also, but I can tell you that you are at the right place. The information that you will receive here is wonderful and so are the cysters. My best advice to you is DON'T GIVE UP HOPE!!!! Although i don't know what you are going through or how you feel........... we must all always have hope. And always always.........get second opinions. Don't give up your hope that is all i can tell you ...................
minimoe had good advice, don't give up hope! Just b/c you've gotten the dx, does not mean the end. There's a lot that can be done to help with the symptoms, including the fertility issues. It's normal to be scared, this can be frightening sometimes. Take a look around the site, there is a wealth of info here. There have been a lot of successful stories of women having children with just a little help. Just b/c you didn't get a pap sooner, doesn't mean that you could have prevented this. Doctors and researchers are still trying to figure out pcos, but you didn't do anything wrong to get it. It's wonderful that your bf is so great to stand by your side! Are you seeing a gyn, gp, or another type of doc? Like I say to just about everyone, I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist. Pcos stems from the endocrine system, and they are usually better informed. Good luck and glad you found SC!

Stacey~ Welcome! I'm glad you've found us. Not to sound too rude, but get yourself to another doctor fast. For your doc to tell you that it's not a possibility is first of all horribly wrong, and second of all...bad bedside manner in my opinion. There are many many women all over this board that have conceived and have had beautiful children. Otherwise there wouldn't be the "Pregnant cysters" forum and the "Mommy board". It might take longer or be more difficult than someone without PCOS, but then again it might not. I would suggest finding an endocrinologist, even better a reproductive endo in your area. Starlite is right, PCOS stems from the endocrine system so they're better equipped to handle it. There is hope...don't take this one doctors word as gospel. Good luck to you!

I agree with what everybody else is saying... GET ANOTHER OPINION!!!!!! The "doctors" are just that, Doctors, they are not God, they can't tell you you CAN'T have kids. I had a doctor tell me once that I didn't have PCOS that I was just fat and for me to lose weight. He also told me I'd NEVER have kids, I'm just waiting for the day when I do get pregnant, I want to go in his office and say See, I told you I had PCOS and I DID get pregnant....lol.. that is just the b!tch side of me...lol... but seriously I would find another opinion quick!!!!!!! Welcome to soulcysters. Glad you found us. Good Luck to you!

Stacey by any chance are you located in NY? If so, I know some good Docs. Yes i agree with everyone. you really do need to get an endocrinologist. I have a gyn/endo and an Endocrinologist who specializes in metabolism. She's great her name is Dr. Harriet Mogul, she even has a book and a website. Don't give up hope. These Doctors are not God but you can learn a lot from a trained and very knowledgeable doctor. What I like about my doctor is that she is not above being taught by her patients. I informed her of this site and some other things I had found about drugs. She was so excited and told me she is inspired to write another book. This is the kind of quality I look for in a doctor. It shows that they are open, down to earth and not at all arrogant, which we don't need when dealing with health. We are here for you. You can do it! Set goals and make it your life's mission to attain them, even if it is a little at a time. Believe me the payoff is worth it.

Jan. 1st goal: lose 5 lbs
Mini goal:220lbs by 08/2010 Commitment date: 12/01/09 Starting weight: 265lbs as of 12/01/09
first of all, welcome to soulcysters!!!!!!! you'll find a lot of support here!
secondly, i am 24 and i was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with pcos....my ultrasound showed EXACTLY what yours did. i saw my ovaries COMPLETELY covered with big black dots.....but then when i had my blood work done, it showed that i "don't have pcos"....i'm still a little bit skeptical but we'll see....
thirdly, you'll probably be able to have children, it just might be harder for you. pcos does make it harder to conceive b/c of the ovulation issue, but it's not impossible. my doctor was adament about that. there are treatments and meds you can go on, or (if you want to be more extreme) IVF, IUI, etc.
don't give up hope yet! more than likely you'll be fine! but if you are still worried, maybe find another dr and get a second opinion. or have blood work done. i am going back in 3 months to have more tests if i don't get pg during that time. i was told to "try really hard" to get pg in these 3 months.....
i hope this helps you at least feel somewhat better about your situation. it's not hopeless! and this site will help support you, as well!!!
hang in there!!!!!!

i agree 100% with the girls here! Get a second opinion! My first GP told me that pcos and ir (insulin resistance) doesn't exist and that i shouldn't worry about anything! FYI to the doc: pcos DO exist and i AM ir - i swore i'd never go back to that doc again.
I also had a derm tell me last year that my hair falling out was permanent and that there was nothing i could do. fast forward to my 2nd opinion doc and all that was needed was an iron supplement as my iron stores were depleted. doc's do NOT know everthing.
i agree with jessica24 - doc are just that docs. and they are trained in their specific field - and most are v v reluctant to tell you that they do not know how to treat you.
But as pcos is a problem with your hormones an endo is a v v v good doc to have as part of your team. And make sure that your ob/gyn is well informed on pcos - as you could see from most off the gals's posts a LOT of cysters are either pregnant now or where pregnant and having pcos is NOT a death sentence for your dreams of being a mom.
i'm getting married at end of this year and will be tcc'ing next year - and i'll be damned if i'm going to let a doc tell me pcos will prevent me from having kids. Then i'll just refer him to all the mommies on this board!
But welcome again - i'm sure you'll find lots of information and support here - the cysters are great!

He there, Stacey, I'm Brody and I have known I have PCOS for almost ayear but I never really researched it either. I am afraid I can't have childern either but I agree y ou need a second opinion. I know how I felt when I found out the chances of me having childern was very very slim. I am praying for you.

Stacey, it really doesn't sound like you have a PCOS friendly doctor. I hadn't had a period for 2 years when I started seeing my RE. Before that I had long irregular periods. My cycle hasn't EVER been normal. I started on BCP shortly before I turned 13. I started my periods at 12! I think you need to start by finding a more knowledgeable doctor and explore your treatment options. You might try the "Find a doctor" section here and see if anyone here can recommend a good doctor for you. Good luck!!
