Default Hello I am newly diagnosed and have questions

Hello everyone,

I was just diagnosed with PCOS and have been put on a birth control pill and metfromin. I am a little nervous about the metfromin just because I have read its a diabetic medicine and not approved by the FDC for this use. Has anyone on here been prescribed this to help with their PCOS? What side affects, issues have you encountered, etc.

I don't know anyone with PCOS so I don't have anyone to ask. I really don't have any information on PCOS either, unfortunately I am the type of person that wants to to know as much as possible and I didn't get the chance to ask everything I wanted to. So any advice, experiences, or links would really be appreciated.

Thanks

JB

Hi there, I was just diagnosed a couple weeks ago and put on metfromin. I had an upset stomach, very tired and sleepy, zero energy, so the doctor just told me to up the pills i was taking very slowly, just give my body time to adjust. There are some other threads on here that I've found with some great information. But if you have concerns, maybe you should call your doctor's office and talk to the nurse. There might be another opition for you.

There is a thread with this in the name. If you click on Forums then go to Metformin under that and then to post your tips on dealing with gluc/met side effects. Its been very helpful to me.

I hope some of this helps you. I would just do your research and be very honest with your doctor about what you are and are not comfortable with and what you do and do not want. I hope that helps. Good luck. :-)

Hi, and welcome x
i have metformin for my pcos and at the beginning it made me have a terribly upset stomach, and was often really sleepy but now im fine so long as i eat healthily. If i have something too fatty then it just makes my stomach bad again!! they joys x
But you should go back to your doctor and ask everything you need, thats what they are there for, not just handing out the medicine, the advice you need too xxx

good luck xxxxx

Thanks everyone for the advice and your experiences. I really appreciate it. The information is helpful and I am feeling more comfortable about taking it. Started last night and stomach was a little upset but not bad at all. I scheduled another appointment with my doctor so I can get my questions answered.

Thanks again everyone!!

Hi everyone,

Well I have been taking the metformin for about 13 days now. I started with 1 500mg pill and just uped it to 2 500mg a day. I was fine with the 1 500mg a day but now that I have uped it my stomach has been a little upset and my acid reflux has gone wild. I am hoping that once I get used to the 2 500mg a day everything will settle down.

Aside from that everything seems to being going well. I have noticed that I have been tired more so then usual so I will watching that and will call the doctor if it gets worse. From what I have read the tired feeling is normal so hopefully that too will go away.

Thanks again to all of you for responding. Its nice knowing there are other people out there.

I do have one question, I want to have kids in the next year or two. How hard is to get pregnant.......will I have to do fertility drugs.....just trying to find out what I have in store.

Thanks again.

Everyone is different, you may find it easy to get pregnant or it may take some time, it differs with everyone. I have been trying for roughly the past 8-9 years, and still nothing x but some people are really lucky x just be positive and keep healthy and tke ur meds and u never know xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'd love to talk with you about the metformin. I am in the medical field so I naturally researched the *ell out of things before I started to take the meds. It is extremely safe, as long as a person doesn't have severe liver or kidney probs while taking the Met. Just let me know if you want to talk about everything!

Hello LitterOf1,

Thank you for your post. Yes I would love to chat about Metformin. I have read all about the side affects and for the most part I really haven't had many of them. Since I upped my dosage to 1000mg a day I have noticed some more. I have been a little tired and have gotten what I call the bubbly stomach within about 30 minutes of taking the meds. I take them at night and I always take them after I have eaten dinner, since a lot of people say to take them with some food. Of course I have no clue what the meds are actually doing. I know they are used to help with my insuliin resistance but how not sure. So if you have any info I would really appreciate it. Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you again.

Hey, sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. I have been sooo busy. It depends what type of info you want on the Met, but just email me and I'll try to get some links for you. I think it's a really great tool and can definitely help ward off diabietes for those @ risk. Not only that, but once a person IS pregnant, I read research where the Metformin really seemed to prevent miscarriage when taken during the first trimester.

Haha, I sound like a commercial, but really I am just a big fan of Met because it helped to bring my darling SON to me. I hate the gastric side effects, but I'd take 5000mg if it were safe and would help me to get preggo again, lol.

Hi jennidog & LitterOf!
I too want some more info on Met. I'm supposed to start in Dec/Jan. I'd like to conceive sometime in the next year (hopefully possible). I've heard about the upset stomach, so what does it do to people who already have a weak stomach. Thats what I'm most affriad of. I don't want my new best friend to be the toilet, I'm in there enough already! Thanks ahead!
