I'm Belinda and I'm 19, currently studying Photography at Nottingham Trent University in the UK. I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago but only after a year of being prescribed the pill for it did I receive a scan. It was a horrible experience, especially looking at my poor ovaries on screen, the unsympathetic nurse leaning over me whilst chatting to her friend. I came off the pill after I found it made me feel worse. I have all the typical PCOS symptoms.. irregular periods, intense cramps (I once fainted during an English exam from them.. don't ask!), hirsutism, difficulty with weight (I fluctuate rather a lot and have a history of eating disorders anyway) and find it ridiculous how little information doctors in the UK have on PCOS and how, even though it is something that effects so many, it's brushed under the carpet.. metaphorically. I'm currently taking loads of vitamins, omega-3 oils, co-enzyme q10 and saw palmetto.. though I haven't been taking them for long. I'd be interested to know what people think of NAC as I am considering taking it. Even though I'm obviously too young, I often think about any fertility problems in the future.. and that really gives me the blues. I'm one of those people who likes to experience everything life can throw at you.. a child is definitely one of them!
sorry about this long-winded message but I'm very glad to find this board and am excited about reading the thoughts and advice of fellow 'Cysters'!

Sorry that I can't offer any advice on NAC - hang in there though, someone will be sure to respond about it soon.
Keep posting and see ya around the boards!

I was the same as you with the pill, it made me worse. I've been on quite a few of the different pills, and I've been on depo provera. All had the same effect, some worse than the other.
I'm taking fish oils and saw palmetto. How do you find the saw palmetto? because some of the cysters have stated that they can't take it. I've been alright on it.
Take care, if you want to chat anytime then pm me or email me anytime.

I took the dried Saw Palmetto capsules and found I needed to shave, pluck, wax etc. less. I'm on to the liquid extract because I've heard it works better. I'm happy to give anything a try! especially as I had such a bad experience with the pill.
N-acetyl-cysteine apparently improves insulin resistance (the core of PCOS symptoms?) and there are a couple of articles online about it. I don't know much about the amino acid NAC itself but it's been commonly used as a treatment to break up mucus in the lungs..
I see it available at my local health food shop and always wonder about buying it. I've posted in the Alternative Remedies forum in the hope for some advice.
