I began having periods when I was 9 years old, it is also when I reached my peak height. From age of about 14 until now (i turn 22 in a few days) I have had NO or few periods annually. I knew that something was wrong, but I liked not having one and i felt uncomfortable discussing it with my mother.I kept a consistent weight throughout elementary school and high school, i was very active and played 3 varsity sports, however i was 200 lbs (I am 5'6). Although I was in shape, i could not lose weight. I did weight watchers the summer before i entered college, and lost 20 lbs. During my sophomore year of college i went to the gyno and was prescribed ortho tri cyclen lo (after just talking to the gyno, no exam) and i HATED it. I gained 30 lbs (keep in mind, i am still working out regularly and eating well), i developed terrible acne, hair on my chin. I took myself off of the medication and didnt go back to the doctor for 2 years (until a couple weeks ago).
I went to a different doctor, who ordered blood tests and told me he suspected PCOS. During the week or so it took for me to get my blood work back, i spent hours online researching PCOS (specifically on this site) and learned so much about it. There are so many things that I wish i would of realized when I was younger, because I believe that I have had symptoms of PCOS since i was about 14 years old. I'm very glad that I finally found out what is wrong with me, and I hope that I am on the road to help me figure out how to beat this.
I was prescribed YAZ, and i am starting it on Monday. I was suprised because during my initial visit he said he would probably put me on metformin, but I guess he wants to try Yaz first to see if my symptoms get better? Overall, I know that I need to work extra hard now to watch my diet and keep excercising.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story and concerns. This board has truly been the best gift, and i have learned so much from everybody. It is so refreshing to know that there are people that understand what I am going through.
Welcome! I was diagnosed around your age too. I was on BCP since then but stopped when I began ttc a year or so ago. The pill doesn't help everyone, but for me it kept my symptoms very well under control. Having a dr who is well informed about PCOS is key.

Your story is pretty much the same as mine. I was put on tri cyclen lo, but my only side effect was that my breasts got bigger, which didn't bother my boyfriend one bit. I'm surprised you weren't put on Met as well, but its best to start out with as few drugs as possible. I hope the new meds are effective! keep us posted.
