Just wondering if there are any Jewish Cysters out there? I'm not married but already I'm in a panic about how I'll ever conceive with all the ins-and-outs of taharat hamishpacha! IY''H it will all work out. I'm wondering how other women cope with mikvah issues etc, bedikah, intimacy etc.
Are any of you familiar with mayimrabim.com? maybe we could start a PCOS forum there?
jewish! distant from the religion and family...but thinking about a trip to israel with a organization that may take me for free..

I didn’t think there were any frummies on this site ! Welcome. You will be fine with Taharat Mishpachah, you’ll learn from your Kallah teacher I”YH, and it’s not so hard. In terms of Mikvah, etc. it all seems to be okay. I have O’d before the Mikvah (and so we did IUI). Have to ask a Rav, though. Mikvah may not interfere, b/c most PCOS’ers have long cycles. Do you have a regular cycle? How do you know you are PCOS? If you have any specific questions, let me know – I feel like a veteran.
I am BT, got married at 28 and waited 1 year before TTC #1, waited another year before checking to see if problem, then it took awhile before the docs figured out that I am PCOS. Anyway, no BFP yet, but I”YH soon.
I am not familiar with mayimrabim.com, but will check it out. Do you know ATIME.org?
Glad to have a new friend and let’s keep eachother posted. I can Daven for you if you feel comfortable enough giving me your Hebrew name.

Thanks heaps for your reply! I'm a thin cyster too - 167cm and 55kg.
I am more-or-less FFB, but not 'extremely frum' - I belong to a small Modern Orthodox community. We have one mikvah, and I hear the lady is really nice, so that part doesn't really phase me. I am on 'Cyproterone Acetate' which is like Spiro and it really messes up my period. I have a normal period and then throughout the month I get random bleeding so pretty much unless something changes I will be a nidda my whole life! I'm pretty sure I can clear that up with bcp when I get married but will have to wait it out until then.
I got diagnosed a few months ago because of irregular periods and being a bit hairy. I had a scan and stuff and the doctor confirmed it.
I remember being so grateful I could be shomer negia with someone so they wouldn't be put off by my body, but this site has helped me a great deal in dealing with my body-issues, I am way less hung-up and I'm not going to be shomer negia anymore because it is a step-up from my normal and comfortable level of observance.
What community are you part of?
Take care, Ayelet (Behira Bat-Yitzhak) - I will daven for you too, if you like.
I also live in a small community, it's quite eclectic, and I love it. Toronto has tons of religious Jews, though. Our Rabbi is black hat, but most of us are pretty modern. Do you like your community?
How come you are Spiro vs. Metformin? What's the difference?
I was niddah for almost the first 4 months of our marriage b/c I stopped BCP and my cycles went wacky. That was hard, but then I was sometimes irregular and was more taharah than Niddah usually. I used to have body issues also. I have learned to love my body (with all of its beauty and all of its flaws), and it feels so wonderful. I don't have any PCOS symptoms, except for the cysts on my ovaries and high LH:FSH ratio.
You are really one step ahead of the game knowing that you are PCOS before TTC. It took a year and half before I was diagnosed! We also waited a year before going to see doctors - if I had been dx with PCOS, I would have gone earlier. Everyone kept telling me: relax you'll get preggers, stop worrying, you don't need to go to Dr yet. But I knew, I had a feeling something was wrong b/c my periods were not always regular.
Anyway, I'll stop blabbing now. I am going in on friday for IVF retrieval - I am excited and nervous. If you want you can Daven for me: Adira Dafna bas Chava Devorah.
Thanks and lets be in touch,
thin

Hey,
I meant to also recommend beyondbt.com to you too - it's a good forum for people who have been BT for a while.
All the best for you IVF retrieval. I will daven for sure!
The reason I'm not on metformin is because I don't have insulin resistance (I think that's why anyway.) I'm on cyproterone, and I don't actually know why i'm on that over anything else. It was explained to me but i didn't really get it.
As for my community, I mostly like it, although I gripe from time to time about some things - it's mainly because where I live there is only this one orthodox shul and one reform synagogue so there's not heaps of choice.
Man, than must have beenn difficult being niddah when you first got married. You;re right about being lucky that I have been dx now so I can sort those sorts of things out for later.
Hatzlacha Rabba for Friday,
Ayelet
Just wanted to throw an idea out there. I am not diagnosed as insulin resistant, but I have a history diabetes in my family, and am on Metformin. Did you have the 2 hour OGGT with blood insulin ? It seems to me that you should try to regulate your periods NOW, so that when you do get engaged/married, G-d willing, you won't have any problems. There are studies that show that metformin works for thin PCOS, even if they are not IR (insulin resistant). Is your Dr knowledgable in this area? It doesn't seem right to me that you should be spotting between periods - your Dr (or one who knows how) should help you regulate them so that you have a "normal cycle". It's just my opinion, but I would try to work things out NOW.
Just my thoughts. Thanks for Davening for me, I will be Davening for you.

I just read about those studies that show metformin is helpful for all - regardless of IR or weight. I'm due to talk to my doctor soon so I will ask her. B''H the doctor told me 80% of women on the meds I'm taking have random AF, but my period seems to have regulated this month. Even if I do continue to have a normal cycle, I think the meds I'm on are a little 'hardout', so metformin may be a better choice. - thanks for the lead!
shock horror - i left out part of my hebrew name Behira Bat-Aviva Yitzchak
I'm Jewish too I've been TTC for about 4 years now (with breaks off and on). We on a break now waiting for the first of the year when our FSA accounts are replenished.
I am also a Jewish cyster and I got my BFP on 11/1/06. I'm not religious so I don't understand many of the Hebrew words you mentioned earlier (e.g. taharat hamishpacha, shomer negia, etc). My husband is Israeli so I guess I could ask him...
I wish all of you the best with your pregnancy attempts. I never got a period (without medication) since I got off the pill, and I was finally dx'ed with PCOS in August. Metformin did the trick for me! I had tried ovulation drugs before being dx'ed with no success.

Most of those hebrew/yiddish words are to do with the 'purity laws' - there is a good glossary on mayimrabim.com where orthodox women discuss the ins and outs of keeping them.
Mazel tov on your pregnancy! May you build a bayis neeman b'yisroel!
