Default Hello! Just diagnosed...

Hello everyone! My name is Caroline and I had my first RE appt last week where I was diagnosed with PCOS. Getting diagnosed with any condition isn't easy but it's so nice to know why you aren't ovulating/getting pregnant. It's a relief, honestly.

So, my RE suggested the South Beach Diet to jumpstart a metabolism change. Anyone else had that suggested/tried it? When AF comes, I'm starting metformin and I'm slightly worried about the side effects because I have a touchy GI tract already. But I'm remaining optimistic of what the drug could do for me.

My boss went through IF for 2 years and told me about this site. I'm glad to be here!

Hello and welcome. I'm also on metformin too and when I first started I couldn't be too far from the bathroom because of the side effects. I started it in May and the side effects only lasted about six weeks for me. If I eat too many fatty foods I have some issues but that isn't much different than before. I found at first it was easier to handle the effects of met if I ate food after taking the medication, but now I don't have any side effects at all of it.

Good luck.

Hello! This is my first post on this message board. I usually post on the sheknows message boards but thought I would try this one as well because it is exclusively for PCOS-er's. We've been ttc for almost a year now and I was diagnosed with PCOS on April 30th 2008.

Anyway, I just started metformin 1,000mg a day last Friday. My doctor said that he wants me to work my way up to 2,000 mg. I haven't had a problem with it so far. What I have been doing is taking it with my after dinner snack so that it is close to bedtime. I do have gi issues already since I had my gallbladder taken out in August of 2007. But really watch what I eat. I also started clomid on Sunday. This is my first time with these medications but so far I'm having no bad side effects YAY!

I started off with 1,000mg of Metformin for one week then went to 2,000mg it took me a while to take it consistantly but after I got the hang of it it made me really sick to my stomach. I was switched to 1,000mg of Glumetza which is still Metformin just an extended release. I have had no side effects and its been about 1.5 months. I am starting a Low GI/GL diet not sure which one yet. Good luck and I can relate to you TTC over 12 months also.

My doctor said I could start the metformin the very same day he prescribed it. I'm not sure what the rule is on that.

I guess I will wait till Friday to start taking the other 1,000 mg. He said to take one in the morning and one at night. From what I have read that is the norm. One thing I have noticed is (yesterday) my stomach was gurgling like crazy. And it was SO loud! But I wasn't having pain at all. And no diarrhea. It was strange. But if thats the only side effect I'm okay with that!
The clomid on the other hand gave me hot flashes yesterday and has made me a little *****y. Not really bad but I'm not usually a *****y person. lol

As for the diet, my doctor suggested trying the south beach diet. I'm going to the library to get the book. If I like it I will buy it. I'm still also on sparkpeople.com which helped me to lose almost 15 pounds a few months ago. I have since gained it back because of the holidays and cold weather (I did all my cardio outside). But I'm sure it could help me again! Anyone else on sparkpeople?

I've never taken met but I wanted to comment on the south beach diet. I LOVE the south beach diet! I went on it the beginning of april last year and went from 253 to 222 by the middle of june! When I went to my first ob appt after being diagnoased with pcos at the end of june I was at 218.

Its a low carb diet and you have to stay away from "bad sugar" but its very easy to follow and I got the book at walmart for under $6.

I think the extra boost with my weight loss was what helped me conceive my son! I got pregnant after 4 years of trying and my 2nd round of clomid! (it took 5 rounds the first time and was lost due to ectopic). My lil boy is due in may.

Good luck ladies and lots of baby dust!

Congrats on the baby boy! I am going to try the south beach diet but I want to make sure it will work for me before buying the book. It seems like a waste if its not going to work for me. Thanks for the info!

Yeah - I've heard of the GI side effects with Met and I'm a little concerned because I can have GI problems at the drop of a dime. The RE nurse told me if I have probs, I can take one pill a day for the first few days and then up the dosage.

Clomid gave me RAGING mood swings, which is very atypical for me - I wish you good luck on it. My RE said that they have a newer version of Clomid that has far fewer emotional side effects. If I need to do more rounds of Clomid (did 3 with no success) I'm going to try it. You may want to ask your Dr about it.

I also have a very sensitive stomach. So I was worried about taking the Met. I did I have a few issues in the beginning but after a few weeks it was okay. Like I told my doc " it cant be any worse then stomach issues I already have" I actually think Met helped with it or maybe it was my mind playing tricks on me. LOL!

Well I seem to be having good luck with the clomid. I haven't had anymore hot flashes, it was just that one time. And my mood swings haven't been awful. My husband and my other family can just deal with it. lol
Actually I'm responding really well to both the meds. I'm glad. I just hope that once I start the other 1,000 mg I will still feel okay. I guess only time will tell!
Most importantly I just want to ovulate!
