My name is Lucy, I'm 22 and live in England. I'm currently at university studying illustration and I am a big Tori Amos fan.
I haven't been "officially" diagnosed with Pcos but my doctor suggested to me I might have it and I've since done quite a bit of research and am quite convinced I have. I went to my doctor originally for acne (I have been through 2 courses of roaccutane which finally seems to be working) and when I mentioned that I was also worried about how irregular my periods were she asked me if I had any other worries and I mentioned my weight, etc and she suggested I take a blood test. However, the results came back normal and maybe we could do some further tests. I haven't been back to the doctors since I started back at uni.
I'm finding this whole experience pretty overwhelming and confusing. I feel slightly in limbo as I'm not sure what the hell is going on with my body. It's kinda scary. So I'm hoping that you guys can point me in the right direction. Whether I should get a diagnosis and if it's worth getting treatment etc. Umm so yeah, nice to meet everyone. I'm glad I found this place.
Nice to meet you. My names Vicky, I'm 28 years old.
I first went to see my GP after not having a period for 2 years. She told me that it was quite normal and that I shouldn't worry!!
So in May 2006 I went and saw another doctor, who seemed quite shocked that my GP had said this. He mentioned the possibility of PCOS ( I didn't know at this point what it was) and arranged for some blood tests to be carried out.
They all came back clear. He then arranged for me to have an internal ultrasound, which showed that I did have PCOS.
My story goes on a bit longer as the GP could never trace that scan! So I was scanned again just 2 weeks ago, and again showed PCOS, surprise surprise.
They now have me on a drug called Metformin.
I would strongly advise that you ask to be referred for a scan, I left it a long time before I asked for another.
Don't leave it, I hoped to be honest that it would have gone away!
Good luck
My GP hasn't referred me to anyone. I've only had some bloodwork done and when it came back as normal it was left at that. But now my symptoms are all flaring up, its making me stressed and emotional and my self esteem is at rock bottom. I really need to get this sorted.
So can your GP give you meds that can help? I know you can be put on the pill to make your periods regular. But, I've already been through 2 courses of Roaccutane for my skin, both attempts have failed, and I'm desperate to lose some weight and am finding it impossible! It's so frustrating.
I feel better just knowing that all you guys are going through th same thing though.
