As for the NHS - don't get me started. Apparently the medical establishment discovered I had PCOS 23 years ago - though didn't tell me for about 6 years.
I have had no help whatsoever - not even so much as a suggestion for a diet.
Anyway....... onwards and upwards! This site has a lot of information which can really help

Welcome Emma! You'll love it here! If you search the UK forum theres info about a meet-up in Manchester next month. A few of us are going (easier for me, I roll out of bed and I'm there!), feel free to come along if you get the chance!
My old doc was like that Maddy, all he ever did was put me on BC to control my periods about 5 years ago, and tell me that my hormones will sort themselves out.
First appointment with my new doc after I moved to a different area was after my periods had stopped for 6 months, she asked what seemed like half a million questions about what I know now are symptoms of PCOS, and sent me for blood tests to check every hormone in my body to see just how funky they were.
I've been on 3 different BCP with antiandrogens, none of which have both worked to get rid of the excess hair (which is my worst symptom) and not given me bad side effects, each time I go back and say I'm not having fun with the latest BC, she tells me not to worry, there's loads of other things I can try. Plus she's given me loads of printouts of information, book reccomendations (just bought Managing PCOS for Dummies since it was half price on amazon.co.uk).
Not all NHS docs are crappy! I managed to find a great one without trying!
