Ok, I was just diagnosed w/ PCOS. I weigh 467lbs and am in the early stage of getting weight loss surgery (not sure if I will get lap band or gastric bypass). So during the interim, I have to take a battery of tests. First of all, I have been dealing with hypothyroidism since I was 16, it runs in my family. My dosage is 100mg, and that will most likely increase at my next PCP appointment. Now I have PCOS. So I stopped getting my period from January '05-June '05. I was always irregular, so thought nothing of it. My PCP put me on Provera 10mg to be taken everyday except during my menstrual cycle. Ok. So I had my 2 hour glucose test and I am 100% not diabetic, which threw all the doctors for a loop! So my physician at the weight center started me on Metaformin 500mg 2x a day. I also deal with depression, and am just switched over from Lexapro to Cymbalta & Klonipin. In the bathing suit area of my back, I deal with ancanthosis nigricans (light brown pigmentation) which I initially thought was from too much sun but I guess is from this. And I took a 24 hour urine test to test for Cushing's disease, they want to test for the cortisol level. I am new to all of this and it's overwhelming to me but at the same time it's not a very talked about problem, so I feel like it's hard to talk about too. Any helpful advice?
When I found out I had PCOS I ordered some books from amazon.com. They have really helped me in understanding the condition. Also this site has really helped.
I felt overwhelmed as well. But once you understand it more it will get better.

Welcome to Soulcysters! It sounds like you've got a lot to deal with healthwise, but I think you will find other cysters going through many of the same issues. PCOS is complicated in itself, and we all understand that!
Good luck!

It sure does sound like you have a LOT going on. I bet the doctors WERE surprised when you came back negative for diabetes! Good for you for taking charge of your life, I know right now I bet you're just very anxious to be rid of doctors for a few minutes.
Coming from someone just diagnosed (me) I know *I* am sick of visit after visit!
Take care, keep posting and keep your chin up!
It's just so nice to meet others who have this same problem! And this website is so informative. Any others you'd recommend? And I seem to go through stages for at least 6 weeks where I diet and work-out and lose NOTHING! And then I get frustrated and just give up. But today I am giving it 3 months per my physician's insistence and I've also started Metformin. I'm hoping this will give my metabolism the kick it needs because I know I've been doing my part but it's so frustrating trying so hard and coming out the same. Thanks.
Welcome to SoulCysters. I know that for me it takes a lot longer to get my metabolism started than it seems to for others. I think that your doctors reccomendation of sticking to it for 3 months is a good one. I would also banish any scale for that entire time. You will possible be putting on pounds in the beginning and watching a scale can make you want to give up. The good news is that the pounds you will be putting are are muscle, which burns fat. The more muscle you have the faster you will loose weight. The best way to tell if it is working in the interim is to feel how your clothes fit. At the end of the 3 months I'm sure you will have seen changes that you like and that will keep you motivated. Also, now that you are on met, the weight will be easier to remove (in theory). I hope you get some more answers soon. Check out some of the weight loss groups in the dieting section. I'm in the 70 by summer group and its awesome. You are welcome to come try us out if you like. See you around the boards.
