Unhappy Help

At 500 mg I had diarreah for 1 night. I just started taking my next 500 mg and am feeling slightly nauseated....or hungry....I can't tell which. I'm afraid to take my second pill for fear i'll be throwing up or stuck on the commode all night. What should I eat to help ease these symptoms.

Are you taking the Met with food? That will usually help with the nausea. Also, try to avoid any heavy or greasy food which seems to cause diarrhea. I ate things with ginger which can help nausea. You can make ginger tea by just cutting & peeling a bit of ginger root and putting into a small pot with water and boiling it for a little while. Once it cools slightly you can drink it to help calm your stomach...tastes like ginger ale without the fizz. There's a reason our parents gave it to use when we were kids! I also eat some organic ginger snaps in a pinch(mine are from the ShaSha Bread Company which is local to me, they are so good!).

I have been on Met for about 6 weeks and experienced similar symptons as you are now. I am doing much better now so hang tight...it should get better.

Thanks for the advice Crystal. I really appreciate it. Yes, I'm taking the met w/food. But of course my favorite foods in the world are all fried. I'm also trying to loose weight so I know I'm going to have to make some adjustments. This just helps to reinforce what I need to do with my diet.

I'll definitely try the tea. Thanks so much for posting.

Buggie--What really worked for me (and still works when I occasionally have nausea) is bland whole grains. Since they're not refined, white carbs, they're not bad for us. Also, lots of water all the time and peppermint tea when the nausea hits. (Peppermint, like ginger, is a natural stomach-calmer.)

Best to you!

Hello,

When I started Met my doctor told me not to increase it until the diarrhea wasn't there (loose stools are very common though, even after your body adjusts). I'd say you should be calling your doctor.

THanks for the info on the greasy foods, maybe that's my problem.

Carrie

La Blanca,

I forgot about the thirst! When I started taking Met I couldn't get enough water. It was insane! I may try to whole grains as well...do you just have a piece of bread? I only eat whole grains anyway so I may try it as well.

carriebabbie,

If I eat potato chips, chocolate or anything not as healthy I have the worst diarhhea within an hour, which I didn't get before Met. I mostly eat baked chicken or salmon(sometimes eggs) with salads for dinner. I also make my own bean soup to eat for lunch during the week. For some reason popcorn does not bother me at all. I get the mini bags so that I can control the portion size. I never eat fried food at home and would really not choose it if I were going out for dinner. I don't like the feel of greasy food in my mouth...I am even starting to not enjoy chips because I know what I will be in for if I eat them.

Have a great day all!

The things that work for me are: toast (dry or with a little Brummel & Brown), rolls, brown rice, pasta, oatmeal...really any of that.

La Blanca-

Thanks for the tip about the mint. When I start feeling queasy, I just pop a piece of spearmint gum in my mouth and it really helps. I just added another 500mg of Met today I (I'm up to 1500/day now). I'm hanging around the house in case I have any issues. I really appreciate all of your information.

You're so very welcome! I keep mint-flavored gum with me at all times for when I can't brew myself a cup of tea--it works great for me and I'm really glad it's working for you, too!

Good luck as you keep increasing!
