Unhappy help???

Hello,

this is my first itme posting on this site and I really hope someone out there can offer me advice because I feel really confused about my PCOS.
Basically after a series of tests several years ago, I was diagnosed with PCOS...after coming off the pill after a 3 year stint on it, I didnt get a period for just under a year, I put on over a stone in weight in a really short space of time and I all of a sudden developed agressive spots on my face. the doctors here made me feel like an attention seeking little fool to be honest, but I felt really worried all these changes...they casually mentioned I may have PCOS and that it might mean I would have difficulty having children one day, but that I should just go on Yasmin and it would be fine. so I did it and - although I didnt really lose all the weight, i stopped putting it on., my skin cleared and i had new 'fake' periods!! Great. until it dawned on me one day that this was masking the symptoms, rather than addressing them. when I spoke to my doctor about this, he glibly told me that unless I wanted to have kids right now, I should find something else to worry about. I explained I wanted to take responsibilty for my own health rather than pumping myself full of hormones if at all possible...surely if they were in working order once upon a time, there must be a way to bring them back? so, with a big bald patch peeking through my hair where I had combed it over, I went along to a trichologist....this was the first person to suggest I find out more about the condition I had been diagnosed with (by the way I would just likie to point out that they did SOOOO many tests which all showed I had PCOS and getting info on it from any of them was really hard). So I just wanted to share the things that helped me a little.

Agnus Castus tincture - apparently it helps to balance out your hormones. since I gave up the bcp 4 months ago, I have had 2 periods 'by myself' (lol)!! which I am really happy about

Perfectil -vitamin supplement for hair skin and nails. - this has kept the skin problems at bay a little, but unfortunately they are starting to return and I am starting to wonder whether I should go back on bcp or persevere????

this will sound weird, but my diet has been pretty much vegetarian and I actually think it has helped. I eat a lot of soy (soy milk, tofu etc) and a huge amount of vegetables and try to keep sugar and refined foods to a minimum. I have still put on weight since coming off bcp inspite of starting a vigorous exercise plan for 2 months , but I really want to try and stay off bcp.......I want to try and make this problem better, not just the symptoms.
I can't ask my doctor...they just prescribe me bcp....does anyone else have any other suggestions? I feel quite alone with this. Thanks for reading all of this, I don't mean to sound negative, but having a lot of the old problems creeping back, I am starting to feel lost about all of this again.... x

You're on the right track Shan, bcp only masks the symptoms and can even make insulin resistance worse. Agnus castus is a good start. If skin is a problem for you, look into an anti-androgen such as licorice or saw palmetto. You'll see threads about both here. A possibility is that you are gaining weight from insulin resistance. Cinnamon, chromium, and apple cider vinegar to name a few can help you utilize your own insulin better.
