I can't take the diarrhea! I've only had it three times since going on Met but those three times I had it I was MISERABLE. It was difficult to even sit down after awhile! I need some tips badly, PLEASE. Does Imodium work for you guys? I took it last time (one pill at first and then one more pill about an hour later) but it didn't seem to do anything.
It's a common side effect to the Met. How long have you been taking Met?
Don't take another pill to combat this one if you can avoid it. It is a side effect that tends to stop in time, if you can deal with it and let your body adjust.
Try eating more carbs (not a lot) when you take the Met...don't take it and eat a salad and lots of veggies that irritates things.

I am on met and have just lived with the diarrhea...it sucks...but I have heard some of the other cysters say that metformin xr is better since the symptoms are usually not as bad. hth

When and how are you taking it. If I take it with meals that involve lean protein and carbs that aren't greasy I am fine. If I take it and don't eat I get really sick. If I eat french fries or anything while I'm taking it I get sick. I have only had fries once since starting it!
This is my 4th or 5th week on it. My second week on 1500mg. I take one pill with all 3 meals. I had homemade pizza for dinner last night, and not even very much of it. NEVER AGAIN while I'm on Met!
you really just have to adjust and learn what you can and can't eat with it. I find that if I eat half my meal, take my pill, then eat the rest of my meal it helps, as well as watching the greasy/nasty intake!

Sorry you are having trouble. I am working my way back up to 1500 mg. Right now I'm at 1000mg. I took it several years ago, and what I've found both times is that I do better if I have a little bit of dairy when I take my pill --- milk, yogurt, cheese etc. For some reason that seems to help.
I don't have daily issues, but when the intestinal ickies hit, they hit fast. It's not fun. Usually imodium doesn't help if I'm already "rumbling", but it helps it from happening a second time. I also take it as a precaution if I'm flying or going somewhere that I really don't want to have to run for the bathroom.
Fortunately for me, I feel good enough on Met to deal with the side effects, which fortunately have been fairly minor. I couldn't handle it if it was all the time.

The longer you take met the symptoms will go away. i have been on met almost 2 years. start at a lower dose until your body gets used to it, then gradually increase the dose. take with food and eat small frequent meals throughout the day....helped a great deal with me. now i dont have any diarrhea. actually, take in alot of fiber===helps alot! good luck!
