I have been suffering with crazy heavy periods for 8 years now. after my second child (i started very early) I took depo-provera and gained 30 lbs in 2 months. My Dr's did nothing to help me then and it has only gotten worse since. I have gained 30 more lbs since then, been through 15 or more Dr's, but I have Kaiser so I'm not completely free to chose any Dr. my face is getting hairier, my but is getting fatter, Ive got acne like I never had as a teen and I'm losing my mind. earlier this year my Dr. found multple cysts on my ovaries and after finding this website I asked her to let me try glucophage. She had my blood work drawn and my fasting glucose is 96 (normal) my fasting insulin is 13 which they say is normal. The only treatment they are offering is total hysterectomy. I'm not ready for that, I am only 26. Please help me find a way to deal with this!

Lady,
You need a new doctor and a two hour glucose tolerance test. My fasting insulin was 10.4 when I was diagnosed. It has more to do with your levels after you drink glucose and wait 30 minutes, 1 hour, and then 2 hours. Mine were terrible. Some docs even want a three hour test.
PCOS is a syndrome that can be diagnosed based on the presence of one or more symptoms from the lengthy list of lovely symptoms that many of us have. You certainly sound like one of us! You don't have to have a certain exact level of insulin to benefit from metformin/gluc.
I wish you the best of luck,
Sheri

Thanx for your advice Sheri! It has been a tremendous help to me just to find other women like me. I am learning from other peoples experiences through soulcysters and I am already feeling like there is hope. If anybody knows how to work kaiser so I can find out about Dr's before I see them please let me know. I am in Southern California and so far had no luck with Dr's. I even had one tell me that I just need to drink tea! much love to all the cysters and thanx for your help!

I agree with Sheri. Anytime you are reccommended major, life-altering surgery, you should get a second opinion. There are lots of other options out there if you can find a Dr willing to do the work and do some trial and error.
There is always hope, hon! I went to 6 dr's before I started getting answers. Don't be afraid to vote with your feet and find the best person to help you with your health.
All the very best!
