I have been prescribed Metformin for the last last year. The trouble is I cant keep it down. What makes it even worse is that I know that when I was able to keep it in my stomach - not only did I start having regular periods, but I also lost 50 + pounds.
Now, my gag reflex kicks in just thinking about taking the Met. Oh, and I forgot to mention, my Effexor and my Spironolactone. Its like I cannot take any pills at all now...
I was hoping some one out there may have some ideas on how to get it down. As far as I know, Met is only available in tablets. (?????) Am I the only person going through this??
Do you usually use liquid to take your pills? If I am really not in the mood to take them, I'll chew up a big bite of food and shove the pill into the middle of it so that when I swallow, I won't even feel it among the food.
I hope this helps,
Sheri

Can you speak to your pharmacists about your pills? For a long time I had these stinky pills that made it so hard to take them..they smelled horrible. When I talked to my pharmacist, he did some research and brought in some pills from a different manufacturer that didn't smell. It helped a lot. Sheri's suggestion to take it with a bite is a good one too.
My last piece of advice is to talk to your Dr. Any time anything interferes with your ability to take or absorb a perscribed drug, I would consult him. He may have some suggestions to help or will try another alternative route to the Met.
Good luck to you!

Just a quick comment: I was researching on low thyroid problems and one of the symptoms is the inability to swallow tablets (I was printing some research off for a friend who thought she may have thyroid problems so I can't remember exactly why it is.... I shall try to find it and post it for you). But it might be worth having it checked.

You might try taking your pill with applesauce...since you don't chew applesauce and it tends to have a soothing effect, that might help. Try taking the pill with a spoon or two of applesauce and then follow it with your meal.
