Default Help! blood sugar highest in morning

I was wondering if anyone could tell me why my blood sugar level is highest first thing in the morning. I've been testing for almost a week now and I'm becoming really alarmed that my fasting glucose is the highest in the day. I'm on 1500 mg of met and it looks like it's doing nothing for me. I also test 3 hours after eating lunch everyday and it's a full 3 mmol/L points lower than in the morning.

Can someone please give me some insight, my doctor's appointment isn't for another 2 weeks.

Thanks in advance

There could be a lot of reasons for it. I have the same problem. My after meals blood sugar is fine but my Morning fasting blood sugar is usually higher than it should be.

It COULD be that your blood sugar is falling too low while you sleep, and to make up for it, your body is releasing glucose to raise it. If you happen to wake up in the early morning (2-3:00 am) test your sugar and see what it is. If it is lower than what it is in the morning, then that may be what is happening. You might try to eat 15 grams of carbs (I like gram crackers for that!) and an 8 oz glass of milk and see if that helps. The milk helps the carbs rise slowly so it might help you get through the night.

The other thing is that if it keeps up, you should go ahead and call your doctor.

Kathy is right. It's often referred to as the "Dawn Phenomenon" and it's quite common among diabetics. Your liver begins to dump glucose into your bloodstream a few hours before you wake because you've gone so long without eating. If you have a small snack (1 protein/1 carb) at bedtime, that can often lessen this effect.

Also, I notice you are taking metformin. What time(s) of day do you take it? For people who experience this dawn phenomenon, sometimes it can be helpful to take at least one of your pills closer to bedtime. This can help some to have lower morning blood sugars also.

(This was all information I learned and suggestions they gave us in my diabetes education classes.)

thank you for your responses ladies, it explained everything

I usually take my last dose of met about 2 hours before bedtime. lately my fasting glucose is a point lower than before but it's still high. When my doctor sees my log, she's going to freak.
Are the readings on the glucometer the same that they would be in the lab? I haven't had any lab tests since I started met but the lab tests were much better than the glucometer readings are with met.
