I stopped taking BCP's in November. I have had PCOS for about 14 years but was diagnosed in 2001. I have 1 son who I conceived with 5 cycles of Actos (30mg), Clomid (150mg) and a 3rd IUI. He is 2 now. I want to treat my PCOS naturally. Of course, she offered Metformin again. I took it ang gained 10lbs in a month! Ugh! So, I am slightly overweight, but nothing dramatic yet. I NEED to lose. She told me to try the South Beach Diet and lose some weight. I have been going to the gym and not lost anything yet. Anyway, I told her I wanted to start taking herbals and she basically said..."You would rather take something that is not proven and we have no idea what's in it because it's not regulated, then take something that is proven to work?" Ok, so she's talking about the Metformin that put me in the hospital a few times. "No, I won't take it!" So, I feel stupid and an idiot. Please tell me that herbals are not bad to take? Aren't there studies? I have seen some statistics, but nothing that shows WHO did the study. Any help? Gotta run to the gym now. I am new to this board, but not new to PCOS. Thank you!!
you are NOT stupid! i know i'm only 20 yrs old but so many women on this board have had success with herbal remedies - look in the alternative remedies forum. keep up the exercise and the diet - i think thats the most important thing - have u thought about maybe trying chromium/ cinnamon to help with insulin resistance - are you insulin resistant? or vitex has helped lots of women to get their cycles back to normal, helps with hormone levels, heres a link : i think it does mention a few studies: http://www.positivehealth.com/permit...al/atkin23.htm

I think that is a common opinion of doctors, mainly because they, for one thing, don't really know anything about alternative medicine, and because they don't make more money if you aren't using the meds they want to prescribe you. To me, it's all a money-making scheme.
God gave us the plants/herbs/minerals to be able to help ourselves. Not that I don't go to the doctor myself. I do, and I think that God also gave us doctors to help us. I'd rather try to do things naturally myself though.
I think that, as long as you do your research, alternative medicine can be great. At least you really know what you are putting into your body that way. If you are worried, try picking up a book in your health food or vitamin store. They often have ones on natural remedies, and they usually provide information on benefits and risks associated with taking certain things.
Best of luck to you!

Your doctor sounds very arrogant. You may want to find one who is more informed herbal medicines because there are many that are at least open to the idea of taking them to supplement conventional treatments.
My father had gout a couple years back and his doctor actually recommended cherry extract to help speed up the healing process.
I also once managed to treat a bladder infection using only cranberry. I never had to go to the doctor that time. (I don't make this a habit though. I skipped going to the doctor only because I had improved significantly after one day of taking the cranberry.)
Do your research carefully because some herbs can be dangerous. Effedra was considered an herbal medicine and look how that turned out.
One important thing is never take one of those herbal cocktail pills. Like you know the kind you see in the check out line that say "Energy Blast" or whatever because you don't know exactly what amounts of what herbs are in them. Also always tell your doctor what herbs you are taking, regardless of whether they believe in herbal medicines are not, because there are drug interactions that can take place between herbs and prescription medications.
It's your body and you know if the meds that she prescribed are working for you. If the met put you in the hospital then it seems that it is not good for you.
I have done some research on Vitex and talked to a few women that have taken it. So far it seems to work for them but takes a long time to start working. I started it yesterday. We shall see. What ever you start taking do a lot of research.
I agree with S-Piper. Maybe a doctor with an open mind that understands herbs/vitamins and modern meds.
