Question HELP! Had sugar the morning of my fasting insulin test -- HELP

My Dr. suggested I have a fasting insulin blood test done. I didn't eat anything after midnight. When I woke up in the morning, without thinking, I at a piece of hard candy and chewed sugarless gum and a little diet coke to take my Nexium and Adipex. I woke up at 8am and my test was at 9am. Would this piece of candy/sugarless gum and diet soda make my fasting insulin level seem higher than normal? I didn't tell my Dr., I should have, I know. The thing is my level came back a little high for fasting so my Dr. put me on metformin.

Any advice is appreciated

It definitely would have an impact on the numbers, and probably why it was higher than normal. Diet soda spikes insulin levels even though there isn't sugar in it. The body responds to it in the same way as if it is normal sugar...by releasing insuling. Metformin isn't a fun drug to be on if you don't need it. I'd be tempted to ask for a retest unless you were wanting, and truly believe you need to be on met.

Hope this helps.

You need to tell your doc and have the test redone with a true fast. That would definitely impact your numbers.

Good luck!

Yep, the test needs to be redone...the results are not accurate without a total fast. Definetly give your Doc a call.

Hi, I work in a lab, you should have it done again. It wouldn't make it go up a whole lot but it will make it go up slightly and you definitely want a accurate result. Now that you have started metformin that may affect it too. You can have water before the test, just no food or gum or other drinks 10 to 12 hours before the test. The others were right any time you eat something sweet even splenda or other sugar substitutes make your insulin spike and affect your sugar. Sorry you have to get poked again It's easy to forget and put a piece of gum or something in your month, we have to have people come back a lot because of that). Good Luck!

What happens if I'm really not IR but I've been on 1500 mg. of Met?
