I was diagnosed with PCOS in January and was prescribed Metformin by the gyno. After a month of terrible GI issues I wen to go see an endocrinologist and he prescribed me Actos for my IR- it was great in reducing the side effects and I got my period 2 months in a row (that was huge for me) but I also gained 15lbs. Today I went for a follow up with my gyno and she really laid into me- told me to get off the actos immedietly as its only hurting the situation not helping, prescribed me more met (which i am dreading taking, and prescribed birth control pills to help reduce my testosterone. I'm feeling really discouraged because I'm ready to start trying for a baby and to be honest I was hoping to be prescribed clomid, but instead she told me not to even think about trying until I've been on both the metformin and birthcontrol for 6 months, and that I should loose 30-40lbs or else I'd probably just have a miscarriage anyway. I'm just depressed, but i know I need to stick with the program not only for me, but also for my baby that I want so bad.
My question is has anyone had any sucess with nutrisystem and metformin for weight loss? I came home today and ordered the Women's Diabetic system (even though I'm not a diabetic, i figured it would help with the IR) and it cost me $300. If it works it's worth it. Anyone that can offer any other advice on weight loss and healthy life style would be great.
Thanks ladies,
Sparkle

Sparkle, it sounds like you need to find a new dr. Actos doesn't make PCOS worse. If you want to TTC, then that decision is up to you. I was 100lbs overweight and my dr still put me on Metformin and Clomid so we could conceive. Since I reacted bad to the high doses of Metformin (I got bad sick) and the Clomid wasn't working on me, she's wanting to put me on Actos and Femara now.
If you didn't react well to the Metformin, but you reacted well to the Actos, then stay on the Actos, especially if you wound getting your period while on it.
Stick with the RE and find a new GYN in my opinion.
I'm so sorry your doctor made you feel that way. I hate when docs are insensitive to your situation. It really is depressing. My doc just put me on BCP as well when I was hoping to be on clomid and it's made me so sad to take it every day. Because like you, i was hoping to TTC. Actually my DH and I have been TTC for over a year with no luck. So the BCP is a huge step back for me.
Good luck hun, hang in there. I just got started on my Met again and its making me horribly sick. I hope you can either find another Dr., or get this one to wise up!!
OMG thats a horre story if any i've heard. Holy cow.
First off, I've had issues with met. The whole GI thing, and more resently it stopped being effective as it had been and i'm at the highest dose. So my dr added to my arsenal of medication Glipizide. Which i will say has dropped my % numbers to almost down to below diabetic.
First drop the Gyno. You dont need the added stress of a jerk face dr giving you crap because you went for help from another dr who is just as if not more in my opinion qualified to treat you for diabetes/IR and PCOS.
Two it's your choice and her negitivity would have promted me to speak to a boss or to the complaint department. What she said was rude and way out of line. Granted weight can factor in to carrying a child full term. But it's your choice.
Please report her as a bad dr. and find a new one! Patient rights state you have the right to being treated with respect.
Those with horrible GI issues, have you tried an anti diarreal otc med. such as Immodium? It seems to help with the running for the nearest bathroom.

I'm sorry you are so discouraged, I don't have any advice about nutrisystem. I would like to suggest you seek the help of a RE and stick to the endocrinologist. Also make sure your endo knows you want to get pregnant. They usually have a better understanding of PCOS.
I currently have both an endo and RE and they are working together to help me get pregnant. We have also discussed my weight and my Endo was quite blunt...not mean about the whole thing (but again that is her job). She put me on metformin and a low-carb diet in order to help me lose some weight, which would make it easier for me to get and stay pregnant. I feel like we are working together as a team.
I guess the whole point of this message is to suggest you ensure all your doctors understand your goals. At times they will tell you things that don't make sense. Please be sure you don't leave until you understand the reasoning behind what they are telling you. Of course if you don't agree with their course of action and feel like they are not listening to you move on and find a new doctor.
Your dr should never make you feel worse!! Get a new one. There are to many different therapies you can take without using BC, which I have read only makes PCOS worse. It does absolutly nothing for it. all it does is mask the problem.
weight loss can make a huge difference, I lost 25 pounds and started to Ovulate on my own.
Clomid would level out your hormones, if you are ready than you should try a new dr that will help you. And who is she to say you would probably just have a miscarriage anyway? weight is in no way linked to miscarriage. she is a bad dr.
