Hi all,
I have just found this site and have already found it immensely useful. It is a relief to find myself not so alone as I thought!.
My story is that I have known that I had polycystic ovaries since I was about 19. At that time this didnt mean much to me. I knew I had problems with my weight and at that time had developed an eating disorder. The clinic where I was being treated was looking at the effects of eating disorders on reproductive function and so my ovaries were studied over a regular period for about three years. Somewhere in some medical journal these pictures still exist!. As I gained some 'order' over my eating I was sent on my way - but with very little information about PCOS or what I might encounter - except that some nurse told me that I might find it difficult to become pregnant.
Fast forward 15 years to last September when my partner and I decided that after 12 years together we would ttc. I came off the pill and fell pg in the next month. We were so excited and it felt so perfectly timed. Sadly my baby failed to thrive inutero and at 20 weeks we lost her. No words could explain the way that this loss has affected us - suffice to say that it has been a long hard year.
My periods failed to return to normal. I had cycles of 39 days, 37 days, 54 & 55 days, and then 71 days! Meanwhile my weight skyrocketed. I put this down to the baby weight and thought that as my body realised it was not pregnant anymore things would right themselves. In April I had gained 1.5 stone in the space of six weeks. I was losing so much hair when I washed it, that the drainage pipes clogged up twice. My skin was breaking out in the weirdest places.. Just about then I read an article about PCOS and the penny dropped. I went to the doctor who confirmed that I probably had the condition. However bloodwork revealed that my LH:FSH ratio fell within normal ranges. She referred me to a RE and after a 6 month wait I have finally got a date! I am going on the 25th of October for my first consultation and could do with any good advice about what to ask about, tests to request etc etc. I have read some of the obvious links already but please let me know if you have any personal recommendations as to what I should tackle when I go for my first appointment!
Many thanks in advance for your words of wisdom and sorry for this long rambling personal history!
