First, I want to say I have done exactly what you are doing! My longest bleed was for over a year.
Second, go see an Endocrinologist, someone who specializes in hormones! Regular Dr's and even Gynecologists sometimes do not have enough training to deal with PCOS.
Third, as your Dr about getting on Metformin, a drug that has been proven to help with PCOS symptoms. You can read a ton about metformin on this website and I am hoping that someone else will chime in with more knowledge than I have.
Metformin is the only thing that stops my continual bleeds. I even went on a double-dose of non-stop birth control pills for 6 months and bled the whole time. Most Dr's use birth control pills as a "quick-fix" to control bleeding because it is fast, easy, and simple and doesn't require them to actually figure anything out!
Fourth, get on some iron pills! I got so anemic they almost admitted me to the hospital and put me on IV's!
Lastly, don't settle for a Dr who just wants to pass it off, insist that they figure it out and get it under control. I have gone through so many Dr's until I finally found one who would listen to me and be a pro-active partner in my health care.
By the way, Naproxen Sodium (i.e. Aleve) really helps with cramps!
P.S. Though metformin did not help me get pregnant, it has helped alot of women with PCOS have a baby... just something to keep in mind
