I am the mom of a teen daughter, 15, just diagnosed. I can go back years and see signs most notable my hubby was always telling her to clean her elbows. turns out that is acanthosis... and when she got her period after 6th grade, she has gained at least 30 pounds even though she is a premier level soccer player and played varsity for her high school and still couldn't lose any weight!
The Dr wants us to try glucophage. Im nervous because of all the side effects but hopeful because perhaps it will give her the boost she needs to lose some weight and get rewarded for her efforts. On top of all this (we started down this road in Nov) she blew out her knee in Feb and needed majory surgery which of course cut out all exercise and she is slowly working her way back, but its even harder for her.
I have also been taking her to a kinisiologist/chiropractor and she immediately got her period and is getting it every 6 weeks 3x in a row which is an improvement over every 3-4 mos. He is a family friend so i totally trust him.
Help. don't know what to do about the meds. she is totally onboard with watching her diet (if I could just narrow it down better) and exercise- she has been cleared to start moving again but no soccer yet and she is open to seeing a nutrionist to really help her make good choices and get me out of the loop.
any advice, tips, suggestions, greatly appreciated.
I'd say go for it. Especially with it being summer she can use this time to adjust to the medicine and hopefully be done with any side effects by the time school starts. It seems to have helped a lot of people (not me, though as far as I can tell) so I think it'd be worth a shot. Plus, worse comes to worse, she can always stop taking it.
I began getting PCOS symptoms at 14 (facial hair, cyctic acne, irregular periods, etc). I played varsity sports year round, and played college basketball. I think that being so active was the only thing that kept the symptoms from getting worse. Once I stopped playing sports, the weight just poured on. I am now 29 and have lost 45 lbs (80 more to go). I have found that I have to watch the calories from carbs. For some reason, the carbs just stick to me. I would talk with her Dr. to make sure she gets the right amount of calories for her activity level. Send her my encouragement.
By the way, I also tore my PCL in my right knee while playing basketball in college. After surgery and rehab, I tore my ACL in the same knee 1 year later. I've had two more knee surgeries. I feel her pain. Tell her to keep working hard! Good luck!
